Went ahead and added ZeroTalk search support to my demo search site. This little site has become ridiculously handy and is basically 0 effort to manage (as any new content updates are automatic since it's fetching from other sites).

Right now it has: zeroup support (file search), kopykate (video), zerolstn (music), zerosites (web search), and now zerotalk (forum search).

The ZeroSites portion has effectively surpassed kaffiene in the index count, since zerosites has more sites than are in the tagged kaffiene index.

Perhaps I should add in zerome user search support, and switch kaffiene over to the new system? The site support far surpasses what kaffiene does, since they more or less fetch the same way (direct text search) but kaffiene uses hand-picked tags while the new site just fetches descriptions from zerosites.

Kaffie · kaffie@zeroid.bit8 hours agoReply

@SSDifnskdjfnsdjk: Ah, the direct link to it worked. It just didn't work when I clicked the links from the front page for some reason.

@Blurhy: The sorting I used on my page was just by time. Kaffiene I had actually fetched peer/seed counts for each site, but that's a bit difficult to do now, and isn't exactly automated. For the zerome user search what I did was grabbed the number of followers and sorted that way (more popular users were higher up).

Good to hear regex should work with sql queries.

Blurhy · blurhy@zeroid.bit9 hours agoReply

@Kaffie:

Can you do regex searches on dbs?

Of course we can

As for combining results, the problem is that there's no way to actually sort them. Not sure how I'd go about doing that.

It depends on your algorithm

SSDifnskdjfnsdjk · ssdifnskdjfnsdjk@zeroid.bit9 hours agoReply

@Kaffie: for me it works, i just tried 0list search (link) it asked me to Grant merger permission and in a few seconds displayed first results from the external site. btw. i am not a dev. so i can not answer your questions:

  • "Can you do regex searches on dbs"
  • "As for combining results, the problem is that there's no way to actually sort them. Not sure how I'd go about doing that."

maybe @blurHY can

Kaffie · kaffie@zeroid.bit10 hours agoReply

@SSDifnskdjfnsdjk: yeah it's a very basic search. Kaffiene is more flexible in that regard. Should be easy enough to add I think? Though the way kaffiene searched was a bit different (basic regex text search rather than querying a db). Can you do regex searches on dbs?

As for combining results, the problem is that there's no way to actually sort them. Not sure how I'd go about doing that.

As for your link, the searching of the external sites doesn't seem to work for me.

SSDifnskdjfnsdjk · ssdifnskdjfnsdjk@zeroid.bit11 hours agoReply

yes, it can be handy if there is some SE that can search popular ZN sites like your demo search site. Only make it a bit more user friendly and possibly make it default to search all the supported sites in one search and differentiate various types of search results (video, audio or a site link). If there are too many results, user can click to eliminate for example video/audio results in one or two clicks and use operators like -excludethis -excludethat OR !notthis !notthat
Btw. site seems to work with exact phrase, not separate words, so the results is limitted (which may be an advantage), though maybe if it returns no results, maybe i can click a button and it will search separate words of my phrase..
-
this already has zerome search + 0list search, maybe considr migrating it to your SE..

Kaffie · kaffie@zeroid.bit14 hours agoReply

@Blurhy: I don't even know how to do that on my machine, let alone some random joe who almost certainly doesn't.

Blurhy · blurhy@zeroid.bit14 hours agoReply

@Kaffie: Laziness, no solution, or just search through the fs, all bytes

Kaffie · kaffie@zeroid.bit14 hours agoReply

@Blurhy: Then we still run into the same problem: developers who don't add a search feature to their site.

Blurhy · blurhy@zeroid.bit15 hours agoReply

@Kaffie: After all, ZeroNet's API can be better

Blurhy · blurhy@zeroid.bit15 hours agoReply

@Kaffie: For zeronet, I mean a sql statement defined in content.json, and a search ui in sidebar, this makes developing search feature easier

Kaffie · kaffie@zeroid.bit15 hours agoReply

@Blurhy: The problem is that SQL dbs can be structured in many different ways. So you're basically just stuck writing complex sql queries to fetch content. Not exactly user-friendly. Sites themselves can add in search features, such as how kopykate did. But I found kopykate's search/browse function to be cumbersome. And many sites don't include a search function.

Blurhy · blurhy@zeroid.bit15 hours agoReply

The search is another stuff should be included in zeronet itself. As a component can be call by site or something in sidebar, for each site

We need to rebase zeronet onto ipfs, but of course, keep the original protocol supported.
IPFS is a decentralized filesystem, you can get file by given hash.
So it's immutable, which means you have no way to change a file.
However you can add a new file, so it's just like git.
And It's more decentralized, because of DHT.
Some projects over it are being commercialized, which means gov cannot ban it due to economics influence.

As a result, I created IPZN, a decentralized application layer protocol, means that it doesn't rely on particular infrastructure.
So It can be used on BitTorrent and original zeronet, or even F2F networks.

blurHY · blurhy@zeroid.bit14 hours agoReply

@Kaffie: IPFS will use IPFS as fs, and its pubsub as communicating system, finally forms a dynamic dweb

blurHY · blurhy@zeroid.bit14 hours agoReply

@Kaffie: it's not decentralized. currently ipfs doesn't support dynamic content (but planned)

Kaffie · kaffie@zeroid.bit14 hours agoReply

@blurHY: Could you give the ipfs link to that site? I'm happy to participate on the forum if it's decentralized. Sounds neat. When I said "forum or a place to talk" I didn't mean the clearnet. If you're using the clearnet to discuss a decentralized platform, it's already a failure.

blurHY · blurhy@zeroid.bit14 hours agoReply

@Kaffie: discuss.ipfs.io

Kaffie · kaffie@zeroid.bit14 hours agoReply

@blurHY: My rule of thumb is that if it doesn't even have a forum or a place to talk, it's not a good replacement for the web.

blurHY · blurhy@zeroid.bit14 hours agoReply

@Kaffie: It means that the content is not popular. In IPZN, files will be auto pinned. Don't be disappointed in IPFS, it's a well coded infrastructure. It's not user-friendly, so it has only a few peers

Kaffie · kaffie@zeroid.bit14 hours agoReply

@blurHY: seems like damn near every ipfs link I've tried is dead. No content, content never stays up, and no way to interact with sites. Kinda makes it useless.

blurHY · blurhy@zeroid.bit14 hours agoReply

@Kaffie: - What do you mean. What is not accessible

Kaffie · kaffie@zeroid.bit15 hours agoReply

@blurHY: Having nothing accessible is a feature?

blurHY · blurhy@zeroid.bit15 hours agoReply

@Kaffie: It's not issue, but feature. Hosting files permanently is not good. If you want to host something forever on IPZN, just let all nodes ipfs.pin some file. BTW, js-ipfs has no gc feature

Kaffie · kaffie@zeroid.bit15 hours agoReply

Has IPFS resolved the hosting issue yet? ZN is much more reliable.

Like why tf did you put a dish in the sink???

To make it moist so that the food stuck on it gets off easier later (and leaving moist dish out of the sink seems unnatural to me)

But then there ends up with a buildup of water in the sink or on the existing dishes in there.

In my case, there shouldn't have been a buildup in the sink and the water was already in the dish, which was the point

Blackgrab · blackgrab@zeroid.bit2 days agoReply

Kaffie commented on Kaffie's post: @SSDifnskdjfnsdjk: Ah, the direct link to it worked.
Blurhy commented on Kaffie's post: @Kaffie: > Can you do regex searches on dbs? Of course we can > As for combining results, the problem is that there's no way to actually sort them. Not sure how I'd go about doing that. It depends on your algorithm
SSDifnskdjfnsdjk commented on Kaffie's post: @Kaffie: for me it works, i just tried 0list search ([link](/1xiwbXaTbo9XU32hEpW4NyjZHrugSFdo6/?/zite/zerolist)) it asked me to Grant merger permission and in a few seconds displayed first results from the external site. btw. i am not a dev. so i can not answer your questions: - "Can you do regex searches on dbs" - "As for combining results, the problem is that there's no way to actually sort them. Not sure how I'd go about doing that." maybe @blurHY can

Kaffie commented on Kaffie's post: @SSDifnskdjfnsdjk: yeah it's a very basic search.
SSDifnskdjfnsdjk commented on Kaffie's post: yes, it can be handy if there is some SE that can search popular ZN sites like your demo search site. Only make it a bit more user friendly and possibly make it default to search all the supported sites in one search and differentiate various types of search results (video, audio or a site link). If there are too many results, user can click to eliminate for example video/audio results in one or two clicks and use operators like -excludethis -excludethat OR !notthis !notthat Btw. site seems to work with exact phrase, not separate words, so the results is limitted (which may be an advantage), though maybe if it returns no results, maybe i can click a button and it will search separate words of my phrase.. - [this](/1xiwbXaTbo9XU32hEpW4NyjZHrugSFdo6/?/) already has zerome search + 0list search, maybe considr migrating it to your SE..

blurHY commented on Blurhy's post: pubsub is WIP
blurHY commented on Blurhy's post: @Kaffie: IPFS will use IPFS as fs, and its pubsub as communicating system, finally forms a dynamic dweb
blurHY commented on Blurhy's post: @Kaffie: it's not decentralized. currently ipfs doesn't support dynamic content (but planned)
Kaffie commented on Blurhy's post: @blurHY: Could you give the ipfs link to that site? I'm happy to participate on the forum if it's decentralized. Sounds neat. When I said "forum or a place to talk" I didn't mean the clearnet. If you're using the clearnet to discuss a decentralized platform, it's already a failure.
Kaffie commented on Kaffie's post: @Blurhy: I don't even know how to do that on my machine, let alone some random joe who almost certainly doesn't.
Blurhy commented on Kaffie's post: @Kaffie: Laziness, no solution, or just search through the fs, all bytes
blurHY commented on Blurhy's post: @Kaffie: discuss.ipfs.io
Kaffie commented on Blurhy's post: @blurHY: My rule of thumb is that if it doesn't even have a forum or a place to talk, it's not a good replacement for the web.
blurHY commented on Blurhy's post: @Kaffie: It means that the content is not popular. In IPZN, files will be auto pinned. Don't be disappointed in IPFS, it's a well coded infrastructure. It's not user-friendly, so it has only a few peers
Kaffie commented on Blurhy's post: @blurHY: seems like damn near every ipfs link I've tried is dead. No content, content never stays up, and no way to interact with sites. Kinda makes it useless.
Kaffie commented on Kaffie's post: @Blurhy: Then we still run into the same problem: developers who don't add a search feature to their site.
blurHY commented on Blurhy's post: @Kaffie: - What do you mean. What is not accessible
Blurhy commented on Kaffie's post: @Kaffie: After all, ZeroNet's API can be better
Blurhy commented on Kaffie's post: @Kaffie: For zeronet, I mean a sql statement defined in content.json, and a search ui in sidebar, this makes developing search feature easier
Kaffie commented on Kaffie's post: @Blurhy: The problem is that SQL dbs can be structured in many different ways. So you're basically just stuck writing complex sql queries to fetch content. Not exactly user-friendly. Sites themselves can add in search features, such as how kopykate did. But I found kopykate's search/browse function to be cumbersome. And many sites don't include a search function.
Kaffie commented on Blurhy's post: @blurHY: Having nothing accessible is a feature?
Blurhy commented on Kaffie's post: The search is another stuff should be included in zeronet itself. As a component can be call by site or something in sidebar, for each site
Kaffie commented on Kaffie's post: @Caropc7: Thanks. If you like what I do *please* consider supporting me through patreon, as I'm currently unemployed and struggle financially.
