Method-X commented on Talnicrom's post: I honestly think creating a marketplace is one of the most difficult things to create on ZeroNet and will open you up to lots of legal issues if your @Talnicrom identity can be tied back to your real identity. Yes, ElementaryOS is probably a good fit. It all depends on expectations though. What you are looking for. Anything Gnome based might also suit you.

Looks...Interesting. Also depends on what you're looking to do. I would recommend Ubuntu and just messing around with it more than ElementaryOS (looks like it's lacking quite a bit). There's also CentOS and Debian which are nice to mess around with.

Or as Alex recommended, to check out the different distros on youtube and see which one you fancy best.

go for ubuntu it has more resources and more stuff also there are plenty of flavours KDE/gnome/unity/lxde/mate

I suggest checking out the channel https://www.youtube.com/user/linuxscoop (clearnet fyi) since it showcases many different Linux distros quickly and gives you a brief look of what each one does. Personally I recommend using something like Deepin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8I6FUNpMgM) or Ubuntu MATE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEHxHr-Ih9w) since they both use similar environments if you're not into Elementary.

ks · ks@zeroid.biton Sep 03, 2016Reply

Unless you're gonna be disappointed because it is less similar than you had imagined or hoped for. But try it if you think it has appeal, you can always try another distro if you don't like elementary. The pictures look sleek.

@Talnicrom: something like tweetdeck with a column for each hub can be awesome

Jayofthezero · jayofthezero@zeroid.biton Aug 21, 2016Reply

@Muja: Still a database of torrents technically. :P

Ignoring my joke, some people really don't want to host certain kinds of content, especially if they don't want to waste space for whatever reason. A distributed torrent site should be able to accommodate something like that. And for those worrying about censorship, I'm pretty sure there will be plenty of people willing to seed the NSFW hubs :)

The other benefit to having the torrents in hubs is that it emphasizes the fact that anybody could create their own torrent site front-end and then tap into the same hubs. This also solves the issues that some sites like ZeroTorrent have had where a user would run out of their allowed space on the site preventing them from making more uploads. With a hub system the user could simply switch to a different hub and continue uploading without having to hope that the creator of whatever site will up the user space allotment.

Talnicrom · talnicrom@zeroid.biton Aug 21, 2016Reply

@Dios: It seems to me that problems involving switching hubs has to do with the way ZeroMe is setup rather than the way merger sites are set up. A torrent database of type merger-TorrentDB or whatever can organize itself however it wants. For example, the interface could prompt the user to choose an appropriate hub for each submission or better yet, simply ask the user to set some flags and then put that one submission on the hub for those flags.

Muja · muja@zeroid.biton Aug 21, 2016Reply

@Jayofthezero: > "database of porn torrents"

Wouldn't they be only magnet links?

Jayofthezero · jayofthezero@zeroid.biton Aug 21, 2016Reply

It'd be a better idea for someone to just make a Torrent zite built using hubs. Could probably do it using a ZeroMe clone setup with its own hubs. Theoretically it wouldn't be hard. Though it'd be preferable if it had it's own search system rather than how currently ZeroMe relies on ZeroHello.

Not sure if I have the skills to pull it off myself, though if I could get by with it mostly being a clone of ZeroMe I just might be able to pull it off. Still need to figure out a way to let people to post in specific hubs, so that torrents can be categorized into their own hubs. That way people who don't want to download porn don't have to host the hub containing a ton of it.

-Honey, why is there a huge database of porn torrents on your computer?
-I swear it's for entirely philanthropic purposes!

React and ZeroNet were made for each other!

Can anyone here help me get an invite to a private movie tracker? I'm a long time member of TheVault.bz with a great ratio. Getting an invite for a decent tracker these days seems bloody impossible.

I'm on several private trackers and find most worthwhile stuff tends to trickle down eventually. I've rarely, if ever, been unable to find something on either the lower-tier private trackers or on public ones. So you're not really missing out as much as you might think. Also, be really careful about soliciting invites in a "public" arena, it is a bannable offense and the powers-that-be at the exclusive god-tier trackers pool their records and maintain an information-sharing database that tracks and documents their many users. So if you get banned on one tracker it'll red-flag you and you'll often get banned from the rest of them as well.

In addition to "Everyone" and "Followed users", ZeroMe should have a "Trending" option that ranks posts by number of likes relative to time elapsed since posted.

What are some things not allowed on the "clearnet", either through monopolistic regulation or outright censorship? I've come up with the following but could use some help coming up with a few more...

  • Piracy sites that distribute warez/torrents.
  • Gambling sites.
  • Drug marketplaces.

I feel as though I'm missing a few themes.

Political dissidents, journalists in restrictive regimes, etc...

PLAY + WebTorrent would make the ultimate ZeroNet killer app.

WebTorrent doesn't work with regular torrent clients due to how WebRTC works. It can't communicate to anything other than other webrtc clients. The protocol itself is identical otherwise. Seed a torrent file with webtorrent (desktop) and both regular torrent clients, and webtorrent users can download it. The issue is the lack of people seeding for webtorrent users.

Play uses regular rarbg torrents. For it to work with webtorrent, we'd need some webtorrent user seeding everything. Or rather, lots of them. What really needs to happen is widespread adoption of webtorrent so that the decentralized web can benefit from it.
