Lola commented on Lola's post: When enable, it will attempt to connect to your Namecoin node (full or SPV). It will fail to connect if not rpc configuration has been added to the `zeronet.conf`. It just won't resolve the .bit if it can't connect. I am preparing an article explaining the modification for future reference.
Lola commented on Lola's post: @ssdifnskdjfnsdjk@zeroid.bit: It is disabled by default so unless you enable it wont change anything.
Lola commented on Lola's post: @klu9@zeroid.bit: Do you have anything in the console ? You might need to rebuild the database (sometimes I have to do it for unknown reasons).
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Zboy: The browser won't do that but the new ZeronameLocal plugin does it! It works with full node and electrum-nmc through rpc (see [https://github.com/HelloZeroNet/ZeroNet/pull/1985](https://github.com/HelloZeroNet/ZeroNet/pull/1985) ). I am preparing a post to explain a little bit more.

Lola commented on Lola's post: @Klu9: That's crazy but also make sense. Yeah, I know for COBOL! It is pretty scary. I think in France we have some similar problem but for social security (so for the all country). Not sure about the details but they were complaining to IBM because they couldn't hire french COBOL specialist and that no one could touch it, too afraid it would break.
Lola commented on Lola's post: @FraYoshi 「吉国」: Lol! It was windows xp on this one. I saw it rebooting. Also it was in Santander which is a big bank. You could have expect them to have proper system.
Lola commented on Kaffie's post: @Kaffie: Also IPFS what build first to share file and not browse content. I haven't tried IPFS since... I am not sure how they are doing this.
Lola commented on Kaffie's post: People in this industry tend to think like that. It is unfortunate. I also went down this dark path... But today I am convinced it is all about simplicity more than money. Torrent has been working mostly because people want to share.
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Klu9: Ah ah thank you. It was just my personal thought that I wanted to share. It is not going in the article. So yeah what I am saying is that UX in general on those kind of platform (the one who sell users' data) might encourage unhealthy behavior. An example would be on twitter where you have notification on post you don't even care. The starring system which kind of trigger your need for attention... Encouraging you to post puns more than quality post... I haven't given much more thought on this. What do you think ? Does it make sense ?
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Klu9: Oh yes, of course they can. I was saying that's why I only have one extension installed. Thanks for your post, I have been reading your comments it is gold. You should post it on ZeroTalk. This kind of information is really useful.
Lola commented on Lola's post: Thanks people for your contribution ! Here I want to share my thoughts on this. Some of you mentioned that because you don't have a central server, we are not tracking user and collecting data. It is I believe an important point that I think we can take further. Relying on selling data users for profit also have a big impact on design and user experience. The UX is being developed as a way to generate users data and doesn't contribute in creating a quality UX. I would even argue that it has created toxicity (even enhance hate ?...). Metrics used to build UX never consider the quality of the exchanges. Another point might be the necessity for privacy. Tor is already a good solution on its own for this. A recent post kind of strike me, it was a father mentioning that his daughter has drug problem (of course it was posted by Anonymous). Researching on google information for it would make them aware of this and this is frightening that big companies has those kind of information on minors. My believe is that privacy is needed to build fully grown and functional human being. "Privacy is the ability of an individual or group to seclude themselves, or information about themselves, and thereby express themselves selectively." Sometime you need this and I think Zeronet also serve this purpose. Does it make sense for people here what I wrote ?
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Klu9: No, I don't know the list of the data-leaking extensions. I got paranoid and just removed them all 😂. I just use uBlock Origin as an ad blocker (because it has been recommended by La Quadrature du Net https://bloquelapub.net/)

Lola commented on Lola's post: @Somename666: I did a small [tuto to get started with plugin](/DevCenter.bit/?/tutorials/write_a_plugin). It could come handy. I would advise waiting for the transition to python3 though (which should be for the next Zeronet release).

Lola commented on Lola's post: @Somename666: Yep, I think we should create something a little bit more userfriendly. Wondering about memonic ? Or a plugin which would automatically save the file when modified to a safe place and encrypted of course
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Somename666: The cost is definitely a plus. For the identity, it does has another facet : if you loose your id you cannot get it back. It is a big problem and not really user friendly from my experience. In the other hand it makes thief identity more difficult.
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Klu9: "The above two points mean you don't have to make compromises like letting Facebook or Google own your ID and your content, track you everywhere and exploit data about you." It is a really good point. I do agree with that. Zeronet has started a new paradigm where collecting users data is by design not a thing. I was thinking of emphasizing this point.

Lola commented on Lola's post: @ssdifnskdjfnsdjk@zeroid.bit: "Create a Mixtape" create a new gub for you by cloning a default one (which Mixtape). Zeronet will immediately redirect you through this one (nothing that we can do about it). It is your 'playlist' don't delete it. After creating it you can come back on the main site and you will see a new playlist call "myMixtape" it is yours. You should be able to edit the title and the description using the small 3 dots menu next to the name... What you tried to do is publishing in "Mixpate public" which is a public playlist where everyone can publish any songs. I can see it (I ma currently listening to it). However this playlist is manage by me. And yes I know about the loading animation which doesn't properly show. I am going to work on it. And remove the 'Nope' button. It was just me testing stuff.

Lola commented on Musickiller's post: @Musickiller: Thank you for the feedbacks. I will start on it tomorrow.
Lola commented on Musickiller's post: Ok. I am going to make my own player controller so it should fix it. I might be able to do a quick fix which would pause when clicked on the background image... Do you think it would be enough ?
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Piloth: It should add a new hubs under "My hubs". I should rename it "playlist" really. It is because you need to download the hub. I am using merger site feature. This is the only way I found to do it. However if I fix the url thingy I should be able to give a redirection link which should help.
Lola commented on Lola's post: @ssdifnskdjfnsdjk@zeroid.bit: Even "My hubs".... Yeah the url thingy doesn't seem to work for me neither...
Lola commented on Eibriel's post: @ZAlex: "“Domestic violence has ... breached the principle of equality of citizens [in the family],”" <-- what that does even mean ? That's bad.
Lola commented on Eibriel's post: @ZAlex: I have also read that it is ok in Russia to beat your wife. You will only get a fine but no jail time. Is it true ?

Lola commented on Lola's post: @Eibriel: When I open **data/15k39oW3xh8WCrG2mvgC53EcQisHLAqnox*** I don't see a **data/users** folder... You might need to sign also the content.json file which is inside so it will be share. You need to sign and publish both **content.json** file. It should work after that.
Lola liked Eibriel's post
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Eibriel: Sweet ! If you want to share your playlist I can put it on the home page (I will need your address).
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Eibriel: In **data/users/content.json** replace "lola@zeroid.bit" by your zeroid. You will then need to sign and publish it. And it should be good. Do you know how to sign and publish ?
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Eibriel: Yes exactly ! That's what you need to clone. You should be it able to clone from the home page.
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Eibriel: To create a new empty Hub (or playlist) there is not easy way with an interface for now but you can clone on of the hub and tweak it a little to add your playlist name, description and permissions. I can walk you through it if you want.
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Eibriel: Hi Eibriel, Yes the hubs under **Public Hubs** are just a link to download the hub (using mergerSite feature : http://127.0.0.1:43110/Blog.ZeroNetwork.bit/?Post:87:Upcoming+feature:+Merger+sites) So there is nothing wrong it should then appears in **My Hubs**

Lola commented on Git Center's post: A plugin system so people can develop plugin which can be added so the user can personnalize it. Not sure how it could be done tho... CMS project is a great idea !
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Wanditoast: It should be fixed now. In case it doesn't work you might still need to rebuild/reload the db using the right panel.
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Wanditoast: Yes you need to reload the page with F5. You might also need to reload the db. I've just discovered there is an error. Trying to fix it today.
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Wanditoast: Really ? Is it a blank page or just no peers found ?
Lola commented on Lola's post: @Jetten: I will add it on the site. I am trying to understand what it is doing that. Also remember there is *private* hubs and *public* one. If you don't have the permission to write it can show on your local computer but it will not be distributed. The new release of Zeronet has improved the `fileRules` command I should be able to tell in a less hacky way if you have permission or not.

But I thought that it would be nicer if the user could choose it either by picking a frame from the video or a customize picture. Then I thought that I would also need a blacklist in case some pictures are NSFW...

Lola commented on Gallium's post: Yes, sorry I am going very slowly with this project. Unfortunately people add their videos but don't seed them... It is why you will see 0 peer and sometimes it can take a couple of minutes to find a peer.
Lola commented on Gallium's post: @Ericksoares3: Webtorrent is only using webtorrent network so it cannot see the seeders from KTorrent...

News

The py3 branch of ZeroNet has the new ZeronameLocal plugin. It can connect to Namecoin full node and Namecoin electrum SPV node. It is an alternative to the Zeroname plugin which allows you to locally resolve .bit domain.

Enjoy,

Lola · lola@zeroid.biton May 09, 2019Reply

When enable, it will attempt to connect to your Namecoin node (full or SPV). It will fail to connect if not rpc configuration has been added to the zeronet.conf. It just won't resolve the .bit if it can't connect. I am preparing an article explaining the modification for future reference.

A list of scifi TV comedies:

Some I've enjoyed over the years:

  • Futurama
  • Red Dwarf
  • Final Space (which successfully works as both a comedy and a serialized adventure)
  • Hyperdrive
  • Rick and Morty
  • Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the radio series "looks better" than the TV series ;) And I still haven't seen the movie, which is why I didn't recognize the main character here )
  • 3rd Rock from the Sun
  • Mork and Mindy (with Robin Williams)

The last two are not very scifi, more standard sitcoms using the idea of an alien on Earth for "fish out of water"/"aren't humans weird?" comedy observations.

A drama but with strong elements of comedy (if you get all the Anglophone cultural references the main character makes)

And one scifi comedy movie recommendation that, like The Orville, is both a parody of Star Trek and also a love letter to it:

Original description (in Youtube link): Fake News has got a sidekick and it's called Fake Science. This talk presents the findings and methodology from a team of investigative journalists, hackers and data scientists who delved into the parallel universe of fraudulent pseudo-academic conferences and journals; Fake science factories, twilight companies whose sole purpose is to give studies an air of scientific credibility while cashing in on millions of dollars in the process. Until recently, these fake science factories have remained relatively under the radar, with few outside of academia aware of their presence; but the highly profitable industry is growing significantly and with it, so are the implications. To the public, fake science is indistinguishable from legitimate science, which is facing similar accusations itself. Our findings highlight the prevalence of the pseudo-academic conferences, journals and publications and the damage they can and are doing to society.

I worked a little with two IT people specializing in banking, who told me because there are so many IT people who know Windows and Microsoft software (or claim to know it), the offers of IT suppliers to build a banking system built on Windows/Microsoft are often cheaper than the offers from other suppliers to build one based on other operating systems and software.

FYI these people I knew were COBOL (!!!) specialists, because even today so many banks are using backoffice systems based around mainframes and mainframe software originally developed in the 1960s. The only bank they knew of that didn't use COBOL and mainframes was a brand new bank started in the 2000s... using Windows NT as their backbone.

I was just about to post this! :)
Despite my interest in net censorship issues, somehow I hadn't even heard of the FOSTA-SESTA act and how it removes "safe harbor" status from service providers if the content is related to sex.

A few key quotes, in case of typical clearnet shennanigans (linkrot, paywalling etc) or anyone just doesn't want to go to clearnet:

In 2018, an estimated 42 million sex workers worldwide were evicted from the open internet and essentially went into hiding with the passage of FOSTA-SESTA.
The censorship wave was unprecedented in internet history. Twitter, Facebook, and all major web service providers immediately changed their rules to tightly police what was posted and messaged about sexual content, by anyone. Entire online communities were kicked off services like Cloudflare (55,000 users of Switter), and hundreds of thousands were disappeared by the shuttering of safety forums and advertising-screening services. Reddit removed entire communities overnight. Recently, YouTube banned videos where people simply talk to sex workers.

When Tumblr erased millions of sex blogs and communities overnight, many lamented that without the website they would've been lost and suicidal trying to figure out their sexuality. When I worked the sex crisis call lines in 2005, before Tumblr, our most common call was from teens in abstinence-only education states who did not know how to prevent sexual disease, infections, injuries or pregnancy — and youth who were terrified they weren't "normal."

In 1997, Ann Powers wrote an essay called "In Defense of Nasty Art." It took progressives to task for not defending rap music because it was "obscene" and sexually graphic. Powers puts it mildly when she states, "Their apprehension makes the fight to preserve freedom of expression seem hollow." This is an old problem. So it's no surprise that the same websites forbidding, banning, and blocking "sexually suggestive" art content also claim to care about free speech.

Facebook recently banned sexual slang; YouTube bans users for sex ed or LGBTQ content because it might be about sex; Twitter has a mysterious sex-shadowban that no one can get a straight answer on. Tumblr can't tell a potato from a boob. Guides on sexual self-censoring are popular — and necessary. Google Drive scans your files and deletes what it believes to be explicit content. Apple just straight-up hates sex.

It's critical at this harrowing juncture to understand that apps won, and the open internet lost. In 2013, most users accessing the internet went to mobile and stayed that way. People don't actually browse the internet anymore, and we are in a free-speech nightmare.

Violet Blue, I miss that girl.. She's a wonderful writer. As I've said many times, censorship is a slippery slope. Your terrorist is my freedom fighter. Your Nazi is my (((Nasi))).

I truly miss the sex workers and pornstars I used to follow on Twitter. They were such a pleasure, and so much more than I had any idea they were. Smart, substantial women you would want to know and have a relationship with. Regardless of sex.

They're pornographic sexuality was just delicious icing on a delicious cake. Though I did get sugar overload, and have some earth-shattering falls and fried power grids, ( when the birds fell from the skies, and the fish washed up from the waters and the seas, Everywhere!).

Alas, after 9 years Twitter suddenly and arbitrarily banned me. I begged for the benefit of my followers for Twitter to take me back, and promised I would be good. Something I would ordinarily never do. But I never heard back from Twitter.

Conservatives say I'm a liberal, and liberals say I'm a conservative. (((Nasi))) say I'm a Nazi. Of course I'm all of those things, and none of those things.

“In a time of deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” G. Orwell

I managed to conceal my true identity lol, just long enough (9 years) to gain a better insight into the sex industry and its impact on women. I truly feel like I have a much better understanding and appreciation of sex work and sex workers now.

For many women it can be quite lucrative. But for many others it can be quite cruel and exploitive. These so-called survival sex workers are the ones I and many others are most concerned, and worried about.

I support amnesty International's recommendations that sex work should be decriminalized. But I fear it will be a long time before we ever see that in the United States. In the meantime providing sex workers with some measure of mobile food security could go a long way in helping provide some level of harm reduction.

One of the primary vulnerabilities and tools of exploitation of survival sex workers is hunger, and food insecurity. I think that if we could provide sex workers and other wemon with mobile food security (city, state, national) they would be less vulnerable to abuse and exploitation. And better able to flee abusive situations.

Relatively speaking, it wouldn't cost much. The hard part is just figuring out how to administer it. While sidestepping all the assholes who try to sabotage an exploit these type of social programs for the needy.

My hope is that in the next few years we will see true Universal Health Care. And a modern version of the old campaign promise of two chickens in every pot on Sunday. Basically some kind of grocery card redeemable at any store for a monthly allotment of groceries.

The United States gives wealthy people over 500 billion dollars in interest payments on borrowed money. Borrowed money used to avoid wealthy people's fair share of taxes. While most Americans receive nothing but a 22 trillion debt liability.

You could provide every US man and woman two hundred a month grocery allotment for 440 years. For the 500 billion interest each year you could provide every US man and woman 200 a month grocery allotment for 10 years.

I think the American people are going to demand this, along with demanding universal healthcare as a human right..😊

@Eightyfour: Thanks for the info. I'm merged with only 11 hubs :) and I don't use Twitter, so I haven't noticed that particular issue/comparison yet so far.I guess permanently storing all past content for hubs will eventually grow into a serious issue.

leftside · leftside@zeroid.biton Feb 05, 2019Reply

@Eightyfour: Current merging feature is pointless.
It's like just tearing off the site in a pointless manner and spreading them to everywhere.
Timestamp based hubs or policy is the best: Suggestion: Timestamp based hub system can save time and disk space in accessing ZeroNet sites.

Eightyfour · eightyfour@zeroid.biton Feb 05, 2019Reply

@Klu9: page load time is not always an advantage of ZeroNet, it depends on the situation. Eg. ZeroMe loads slower than Twitter if you download all hubs, even though I will never need most of this data. Social media within ZeroNet needs a serious rethink. But for sites such as blogs, this is a clear advantage.

I think there's a lot ZeroNet could learn from the way RetroShare does social networking, but it's hard to imagine how these ideas could be implemented within the framework of ZeroNet (and whether that's something we want in the first place).
Archiving old content Retroshare has a per-client-per-circle setting for how long you want to keep content. People can choose to keep it forever, or just a couple of days. The way ZeroMe is currently implemented this isn't really possible, but it's worth thinking about.
WOT A Web Of Trust layer in ZeroNet could allow eg. searching hubs you don't have but a friend does by letting them do the search and send you the results. We're not really at a point where this is necessary, but it might help with scaling in the future.

klu9@zeroid.bit · klu9@zeroid.biton Feb 04, 2019Reply

Another point I like about 0net that I just remembered (probably related to the issue of costs and revenue generation):

  • Centralized webpages are huge. You need to download 9-10MB (for a single webpage!) just to read only 12KB of text (and have that text hidden among megabytes of shit you're not interested in: autoloading videos, "Around the Web" clickbait, newsletter signup overlays etc). Even though we are in the broadband era, many webpages take as long to load as in the dial-up era.
Although (I believe) there is technically nothing stopping 0net zites from becoming so bloated, the decentralized nature and the user's control whether to allow a size greater than 10MB (for an entire site, not just for a single page) mean webpages on 0net zites are much cleaner and lighter.
I just loaded a 0net blog homepage and it was total 247kb, and I think 60kb of that was the logo. That's about one fortieth the size of a commercial clearnet webpage! (Vivaldi browser shows the size of a web page as it loads.)
klu9@zeroid.bit · klu9@zeroid.biton Feb 04, 2019Reply

@Lola: I guess the centralized nature means costs. And costs mean a need for income. And a need for income means hosts seek ways to maximize income, like holding users' attention through manipulative behaviour (notifications, Likes etc.)
So yes, that makes sense.

Lola · lola@zeroid.biton Feb 03, 2019Reply

@Klu9: Ah ah thank you.

Does it make sense ?

klu9@zeroid.bit · klu9@zeroid.biton Feb 03, 2019Reply

I wonder if there's anything like Etherpad on 0net for collaborative text editing....

klu9@zeroid.bit · klu9@zeroid.biton Feb 03, 2019Reply

@Lola: Here's my quick edit. Parts in curly brackets {{example}} I'm not sure about the exact meaning, maybe you could provide the original en français.

Some of you mentioned that because there are no central servers, ZeroNet sites do not track users or collect data. I believe this is an important point that we can take further. Relying on selling users' data for profit also has a big impact on design and user experience. {{The UX: one specific UX? Or many in general?}} is being developed in such a way as to generate user data and doesn't contribute to creating a quality UX. I would even argue that it has created toxicity {{(even increasing hate ?...)}}. Metrics used to build the UX never consider the quality of {{the exchanges}}.

Another point might be the need for privacy. Tor is already a good solution for this on its own. A recent post I saw struck me. It was a father mentioning that his daughter has a drug problem (of course it was posted anonymously). Researching information about it on Google would make {{them: who? Eightyfour · eightyfour@zeroid.biton Feb 03, 2019Reply

ZeroNet isn't just about censorship resistence, it's also about content persistence. As long as people within the network care about a site it won't go down.

Another benefit is free and easy hosting, perfect to experiment with.

Offline availability of content can also be useful in remote location or locations with unreliable internet.

Lola · lola@zeroid.biton Feb 03, 2019Reply

Thanks people for your contribution !

I think the best way to answer your question is with a question.

What is free speech and freedom of expression good for?

The answer is that free speech and freedom of expression is critical to the survival and evolution of the human race.

For example, early man learned through the exercise of free speech that's some wild berries were safe to eat, while others were poisonous. That's some snakes are non venomous, while others were deadly.

Today, humanity is drowning in bullshit and fake news. Not only what you see and hear, but more importantly, what you don't see or hear about. Most popular social media sites are little more than captive portals, walled gardens and echo chambers of pure bullshit and fake news. It's so bad that it has even corrupted the very internet itself.

Zeronet and similar technologies hold the promise of solving this critical, and often deadly and expensive problem of modern society. You can do everything with Zeronet that you can do on the internet today, and a lot more. I think Zeronet Etc is the next step. The Holy Grail.

Zeronet's development and function is much like that of the early internet, and we all know what happened there..😊 Technology tends to develop exponentially. I think you will see the same with Zeronet.

Just knowing that I can say what I want to say. All without some jackass arbitrarily and completely removing me. Just knowing that I can have an online presence that no one can capriciously delete. No matter how far up somebody's ass I've got my dick..😈

Zeronet is excellent. And It will become more user friendly and accessible. Which in turn will improve it's popularity. In my opinion Zeronet needs a more robust social media mode. Zeronet's current social media mode seems somewhat neutered.

User timelines need to be more complete and comprehensive. Containing all of a users post and comments. And user timelines need to be easier to scan and review. Twitter does this well. As did the old Statusnet, which Twitter descends from.

For example, I'v answered your question many times. You should be able to just easily scan my timeline and discover that. But all of our comments aren't in our timelines, yet.

I think eventually this will come, along with a lot of other apparently planned user customizations. Like the way we used to be able to customize our MySpace profile or sites. I really liked that. Centralized social media is about controlling you. That's why you aren't allowed much customization. You're their bitch.

And now with Zeronet you can have all that, plus a site that can't be taken down. That doesn't need permission, or a tech guru like me to keep it running for a fee.

My hope Is that technologies like Zeronet will evolve into a global public forum. Where all the important topics of the day can be discussed. Out in the open. Without any place to hide. So that truth can be discovered, and consensus formed..👍😀🎉🎊🎆🗽

Right now the one and only use of ZeroNet is as an experimental network that prevents censorship (from govs, military, companies, etc.) and allows for free, decentralized, always-up hosting. Along with users owning their data. It's a private, free, and cheap alternative to the regular web.

It's like asking "what is an ad-blocker useful for?"

Lola · lola@zeroid.biton Feb 02, 2019Reply

@Klu9: No, I don't know the list of the data-leaking extensions. I got paranoid and just removed them all 😂. I just use uBlock Origin as an ad blocker (because it has been recommended by La Quadrature du Net https://bloquelapub.net/)

@Lola: Yeah, losing the ID would be bad, but you can create a script to back it up.

Lola · lola@zeroid.biton Feb 02, 2019Reply

@Somename666: The cost is definitely a plus. For the identity, it does has another facet : if you loose your id you cannot get it back. It is a big problem and not really user friendly from my experience. In the other hand it makes thief identity more difficult.

Lola · lola@zeroid.biton Feb 02, 2019Reply

@Klu9: "The above two points mean you don't have to make compromises like letting Facebook or Google own your ID and your content, track you everywhere and exploit data about you." It is a really good point. I do agree with that. Zeronet has started a new paradigm where collecting users data is by design not a thing. I was thinking of emphasizing this point.

klu9@zeroid.bit · klu9@zeroid.biton Feb 02, 2019Reply
  • You can have a website without needing a server or host.
  • You can have an ID (or several) that works on any ZeroNet site. You don't need to create a new account for each site, with all the work involved (choose an available user name, choose an acceptable password, remember/write down the password, provide an e-mail address, read and click the confirmation e-mail; repeat for every single site)
  • The above two points mean you don't have to make compromises like letting Facebook or Google own your ID and your content, track you everywhere and exploit data about you.
Somename666 · somename666@zeroid.biton Feb 02, 2019Reply

I would say that you don't need a server to have a website is a big plus and also that your identity pretty much can't be stolen, because it's based on a random generated key, that only you have.

also neither ZeroMe is perfect, i wont shy away from that
ZeroMe fronted is actually not bad, shall it be compromised users can switch front ends with ease, nothing critical resides there

the problem is with datahubs, for example i am using Sun Hub, and by using that i would have to have full trust on nofish(runner) to not abuse it by banishing me off it for no good reasons
(due to signature and so on it's not possible to modify my content)
if you want your content to be discovered, you really dont have much choice but to use the default hubs
cloning your own hub is optimal solution but no one would add it thus your content is not visible thus useless

ideally one day there will be a public hub with photographically owner-less
thus i dont need full trust in the runner of the hub

Thunder33345 · thunder33345@zeroid.biton Sep 14, 2018Reply

problem with federated is that, it puts multiple users in hands and mercy of what normally is one single operator
you would have multiple nodes where users connect to
the node owner can choose to betray[or be compromised] all the connected users
and there's nothing the user can do other then to pack bags and move to another node
node owner can also spy on end users or modify end user's content and so on
it's like facebook but now multiple fb sites that shares data between and owners who can invade user's privacy

@Lola: There definitely isn't a master server, but Gargron, Mastodon's developer, runs mastodon.social and he offers help with setting up instances to highest tier patrons. You can assume his instance has the best support possible.

Lola · lola@zeroid.biton Sep 11, 2018Reply

@Ulrichard: I don't think there is a master server. At least I haven't read anything on that.

Ulrichard · ulrichard@zeroid.biton Sep 11, 2018Reply

@Musickillerwork: Sure, but I suspect a Mastodon server is a lot more difficult to set up and run than Zeronet. I wanted to get into Diaspora for a long time, but I was not willing to jum trough all the hoops to run a node. And I suspect it's a similar story with Mastodon.

Musickillerwork · musickillerwork@zeroid.biton Sep 11, 2018Reply

@Ulrichard: if instances can communicate, you can create your own instance and use it the way you use a ZN client.... in theory.

@Lola: Is there a master server on Mastodon?

styromaniac@zeroid.bit · styromaniac@zeroid.biton Sep 11, 2018Reply

@Ulrichard: A step backward in that it's not P2P, but the benefit is that plebs can communicate with you there. I mean "plebs" as in people not using ZeroNet. LOL

Lola · lola@zeroid.biton Sep 10, 2018Reply

@Ulrichard: Some people have "instances" which is a server running the Mastodon app. It is definitely less decentralized than ZeroMe. If you kill the server it is not working anymore.

But only partly. The others instances will work.

Ulrichard · ulrichard@zeroid.biton Sep 10, 2018Reply

How does it compare to ZeroMe? I hear a lot of people advertising Mastodon. But I feel like the federated server system is a step backwards.

Update Mixtape

I have updated mixtape. You can now see what are the permissions status on the playlist (only if you own the hub). After creating a playlist you will actually need to modify the permissions. For now you cannot do it from the UI you will need to go and modify the files manually but I ma working on it.

I have also added a "donation" section for people who would like to support the project. I am also going to start documenting my work as much as possible.

And last, I have added a playlist from a french music collective which I really like : La Fine Equipe. I highly recommend 'Charlotte au Chocolat' for good mood.

For now you can only do private playlist (but can still share it with everyone). It is just you who can publish. I can show you how to allow more people to add songs if you want ?

ssdifnskdjfnsdjk@zeroid.bit · ssdifnskdjfnsdjk@zeroid.biton Aug 05, 2018Reply

Mixtape public under Public Hubs redirect to the hub site, so i can not add any song. Tried to add song into my public hub, but no new song is visible via mixtape.bit when i enter that playlist. Also may be good if i can delete my hubs including data.

ssdifnskdjfnsdjk@zeroid.bit · ssdifnskdjfnsdjk@zeroid.biton Aug 05, 2018Reply

@Lola "Create a Mixtape" button created second private hub for me just now. I though it will be public hub so i can share songs with others. I do not see add button in the private hub to add new song. Also when one create new hub, it should mention some notice that one should return back to Mixtape. Similar like on ZeroMe hubs where user is invited to visit ZeroMe to browse posts of the hub. Maybe a hyperlink, so it is not confusing what just happened.

Lola · lola@zeroid.biton Aug 05, 2018Reply

@ssdifnskdjfnsdjk@zeroid.bit: "Create a Mixtape" create a new gub for you by cloning a default one (which Mixtape).

People should be able to add a song to the playlist if they have a zeroid.bit address.
