Ivesen commented on ZAlex's post: @Rythyrix: should read from zeronet.conf since I use the aur package zeronet is run with `--config_file /etc/zeronet.conf` but I don't think that's necessary. here's my config file for reference: ```ini [global] data_dir = /var/lib/zeronet log_dir = /var/log/zeronet # ui_ip = * # ui_password = anypassword```
Ivesen commented on ZAlex's post: zeronet has this amazing feature that lets us configure it to use different directories, I have /var/log/zeronet as my log folder and /var/lib/zeronet as the data folder. and zeronet itself is in /opt/zeronet/ . So although I'm not 100% sure what your question really is about I'd say doing it like zeronet and having it default to it's own folder while allowing configuration would be about as good as it gets

Ivesen commented on Kaffie's post: @Mkg20001: #bloat 200000000 electron is pretty much just way overbloated for what it's used for. personally I dislike anything that involves npm because it takes years to compile :v as for chromium, dunno. I like it... As long as it's my browser ofc. of course I can't speak for kaffie
Ivesen commented on Kaffie's post: @Mkg20001: rip also, I can C# :v
Ivesen commented on Kaffie's post: @Mkg20001: now, now. She never said it was electron's fault but basically ethereum is SLOW and cpu intensive as fuck. zeronet on the other hand is surprisingly fast (most of the time) and extremely light (I'm honestly still surprised at how little cpu zeronet uses)
Ivesen commented on Ivesen's post: @Uv: pacman makes sense 50% of the time :v Although it makes more sense for computers than humans, so I can understand why you complain about that. and if you dislike pacman, make a cli wrapper and put it on the aur :p

Ivesen commented on Cyborgkg's post: @Cyborgkg: interesting, but nah 50x50 is already a lot smaller than any limit would be you might wanna try restarting your zeronet and /or run a filecheck on the hub you're using
Ivesen commented on Cyborgkg's post: try uploading something smaller?
Ivesen commented on Rythyrix's post: @Zeronet0: zeronet should work over anything that supports the ip protocol, bluetooth can be used in such a way if you enable internet sharing over bluetooth. and wifi-direct should just work, I can't say I've looked into that in particular but from what I know of it, it should be fine.

Ivesen commented on Kaffie's post: at least it's progress :P
Ivesen commented on Nofish's post: oh, and now that you're back. Would you like to talk about zeronet on the lunduke hour in the future? It seems you have a few fans there and it would be nice publicity (which I think is the main thing zeronet needs right now)
Ivesen commented on Nofish's post: you didn't give any talks though, did you?
Ivesen commented on Ivesen's post: @Rythyrix: `bindfs /var/lib/zeronet /data/.zeronet` would probably work

Ivesen commented on Zaira's post: if you want to post to both simultaneously someone made a python script for that! I haven't tested it myself though so please do tell me of your experience if you try. and for viewing both at once, you *can* use vivaldi (browser) for that, although the experience of that is so-so. here's the python script before I forget http://127.0.0.1:43110/Talk.ZeroNetwork.bit/?Topic:4_1AWwhg4EiWAVttfQboJZ4wJfX3WawfJT3h

Ivesen commented on Kaffie's post: @Styromaniac: fixing the mobile experience would be up to the zite owners themselves, so there's not much I or any other single person can do about that
Ivesen commented on Kaffie's post: @Styromaniac: maybe we can make a chrome extension that connects to zeronet, so that people won't have to install a program. Also has the bonus of working with chromeOS, which would be nice I guess
Ivesen commented on Kaffie's post: @Kaffie: yeah, for the most part I see somewhere between 500 and 1000 users online, so I figure there's probably not a whole lot more than 1500 users in total :p
Ivesen commented on Ivesen's post: @Kaffie: what's your favourite paradigm then? OOP? Personally I find that OOP makes me do tedious tasks that I shouldn't have to do.
Ivesen commented on Kaffie's post: there isn't a whole lot of activity here to begin with, with only like 2000 people on zeronet in total? :P congrats though!
Ivesen commented on Ivesen's post: @Bruary: it's true that some languages are designed for a specific task, but afaik the most used ones are all general purpose. So the question was simply, which language do you like to work with the most, ignoring whether or not it's a good language for any particular task. I mean... I like C, C isn't great at anything :^)

how do I start a database rebuild in zeronet?
the server node I have just started one by itself, but I need to rebuild some database on my client as well :v

Ekaterina · ekaterina@zeroid.biton Oct 09, 2017Reply

@Ivesen: ZeroHello pulls in data from all ZeroNet sites you're seeding due to the Newsfeed so it could be any site's database giving it trouble, in theory. I would backup your ZeroNet data folder before you do anything just to be sure, but maybe shutdown ZeroNet (kill the process), then do a search in the ZeroNet data folder for *.db files and then delete all of them before starting ZeroNet again? That should make all databases get rebuilt from the JSON files. But I'm not sure, so don't do anything without a backup to be safe.

Glightstar · glightstar@zeroid.biton Oct 09, 2017Reply

@Ivesen: Have you already checked GitHub? (I know, that's not an answer, and no, I did not find anything there)

Ivesen · ivesen@zeroid.biton Oct 09, 2017Reply

@Glightstar: yeah, I've got broken databases on my zeronet node
I get an error every time I open zerohello but zerohello doesn't actually have any databases so now I've no idea how to fix it without nuking my zeronet install

Glightstar · glightstar@zeroid.biton Oct 09, 2017Reply

@Ekaterina: I think, that's the only way of initiating an automatic update of the database for the clients

But I believe, that's not what he means.. :D

Ekaterina · ekaterina@zeroid.biton Oct 09, 2017Reply

Do you mean you want users of a ZeroNet site you made to rebuild the database on their ZeroNet client? I don't know if there is an easier method, but setting a higher value for "schema_changed" in dbschema.json should do it. It's normally a timestamp of the last time you made a change. When a newer timestamp is seen by the client, the database is rebuilt, or rather the specific table is rebuilt since there is a "schema_changed" value for each table in the database.

Ivesen · ivesen@zeroid.biton Sep 24, 2017

@U808f: Echoing @Jayofthezero here; net neutrality laws force ISPs to not discriminate on data passing though there networks; it's why it's illegal to throttle BitTorrent traffic, or prevent a reporter's findings dump back to that reporter's HQ. However, due to the language of the law as written, it has not forbidden zero-rating, or the practice of favoring one companies' content over another, such as Netflix being throttled and Hulu being sped up. If net neutrality laws did not exist, then ISPs would be able to choose who got to see what, to an even greater extent than now, up to, including, and past promoting ISP-favored content companies (read: supplicants and extortees) and blocking startups from getting off the ground, further entrenching the ISP's monopoly power. This is why John Oliver did two segments on it, to raise awareness and prevent our corporate overlords from fucking with the connection even more. (YouTube vids, first and second). In short, letting corrupt ISPs dictate who passes through when and to whom is a recipe for bribery of ever-higher amounts simply to stay in business, decreased competition in every market and all the effects thereof (higher prices, lower quality, fewer jobs) and preventing innovation of things you've come to take for granted, such as the smartphone in your pocket and cars you drive. Without competion, well, look no further than the set-top box you've been using in your television for the last twenty years; which has changed more, and which is more useful?

Jayofthezero · jayofthezero@zeroid.biton May 23, 2017Reply

@Benjaminnelan is right. Just set up namecoin, then register a domain with the mentioned bit. You can do subdomains by filling out the first "" like so:
{"zeronet": {"subdomain":"138R53t3ZW7KDfSfxVpWUsMXgwUnsDNXLP"}}

very simple, but blockchains are always a pain.

Benjaminnelan · benjaminnelan@zeroid.biton May 07, 2017Reply

Register a domain with Namecoin then point it to your zite. Eg:

No, but seriously, how do you add a newline? >.> Anyways, functional programming has a place in my heart. It's wonderful when you get into it - just the programs are inherently slower. And about OOP: it works if you have minimal inheritance and favor composition (see: Rust).

Seequ · seequ@zeroid.biton May 01, 2017Reply

Accidental enter. That said, I switch languages a lot and might pick languages I detest (like C++) when it's required or just makes sense.

Seequ · seequ@zeroid.biton May 01, 2017Reply

This is an intriguing question for me as I have no answer. I love Rust for when I need fast and safe code or Javascript for when I need fast prototyping or want something people can use easily.

Kaffie · kaffie@zeroid.biton Apr 30, 2017Reply

@Ivesen: I'm bad with terms/words, sorry. I meant functional languages like lisp or scheme. As opposed to procedural/oop languages C++/C/Fortran/Python/Javascript/etc.

Perhaps I'm just using the wrong words haha. That's what happens when you sleep in your CS classes. I avoided saying OOP because that just gives me mental images of classes upon classes and polymorphism and all that shit. People go way overboard with it and it's honestly not that great when you do that.

Kaffie · kaffie@zeroid.biton Apr 30, 2017Reply

@Ivesen: Procedural languages (those which most people use) are what I think are better. As for 'paradigms' I don't really like that way of thinking about code. I just use the tools available to make things do what I want them to do. Though I guess that makes my code end up as a mess a lot of the time. Trying to structure your code in a particular way is a recipe for disaster. Every time I've tried it it has ended up horribly. By 'functional languages' I don't mean that I hate functions haha. There's a particular categories of languages called that. As I said, I enjoy python. The python way of doing things is personally what I see as best. It's almost always really clean.

@Kaffie: what's your favourite paradigm then? OOP?
Personally I find that OOP makes me do tedious tasks that I shouldn't have to do.

Kaffie · kaffie@zeroid.biton Apr 29, 2017Reply

@Ivesen: Python is ❤️. Best language. Worst would have to be functional languages (sorry fans of those). Or an esoteric language like brainfuck or malbolge.

Ivesen · ivesen@zeroid.biton Apr 29, 2017Reply

@Bruary: it's true that some languages are designed for a specific task, but afaik the most used ones are all general purpose.
So the question was simply, which language do you like to work with the most, ignoring whether or not it's a good language for any particular task.
I mean... I like C, C isn't great at anything :^)

Bruary · bruary@kaffie.biton Apr 29, 2017Reply

Programming languages designed to acheive different goals. Which one is good and which one is bad usually determined by task that need to be done. For example Malbolge designed to be worst possible language to program and does this very well.

Ivesen · ivesen@zeroid.biton Apr 25, 2017Reply

@Border0464fred: haha, yeah. Reception near land isn't too bad, but when you're going a few miles out it's not the greatest.

if you hit enter in a reply it just goes ahead and posts, but when you're making a new post it handles them properly..
