klu9@zeroid.bit commented on Styromaniac's post: @FraYoshi: I like the way [ZeroSites](http://127.0.0.1:43110/Sites.ZeroNetwork.bit/) does it, as you can even select more than one language at a time (useful for multilingual people).
klu9@zeroid.bit commented on Jaka Tanker's post: @leftside: Which problems?
klu9@zeroid.bit commented on caryoscelus's post: @caryoscelus: My theory: we all have only a limited amount of energy & attention for thinking and researching seriously. We can't think about & research seriously absolutely *everything* in life (because there are literally millions of variables) so we concentrate our effort on a few things we feel are most important to us. That means on all the other things in life we are reliant on others and on whatever info about it stuck in our minds over the years from casual exposure. Consequently we are *all* "trusting idiots" on many issues in life. It's just a question of *which* issues. . So for the people clicking on ads, marketing analysis & manipulation just isn't one of the issues they focus on. At least until "casual exposure", e.g. a big news story like Cambridge Analytica, might, *might*, register and impact their feelings on it.

klu9@zeroid.bit commented on FraYoshi's post: Achieving fluency in Mandarin in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing) for speakers of Indo-European languages requires a very big time investment compared to more closely-related languages, studies have shown. So I don't think it should be compulsory for all students, many of whom won't be interested and won't make the necessary commitment. IMHO what could be useful would be a compulsory basic introductory course to foreign languages in general and all the variety they demonstrate: different sounds, different writing systems, different grammar etc. Then after that, students could have option to select a language of their choice in which to seek fluency. --- Disclaimer: My school offered Mandarin classes as an optional extracurricular course [COUGH]ty years ago ;), and I signed up. When I turned up for the class, I was the only student! So I got one-on-one classes the whole year :)
klu9@zeroid.bit commented on FraYoshi's post: @leftside: I wonder if anyone has ever tried this (maybe for ethnic Koreans in North East China). And what adaptations they made to Hangul for Chinese phonology, e.g. representing tones.
klu9@zeroid.bit commented on leftside's post: **The good news**: the file size is significantly smaller. E.g. today's [The Papers](http://127.0.0.1:43110/1Papers8S7fe6LEsa7BwVVywWVbMpUjgwx/?Post:37:) regular SingleFile version is 4.0MB, but the SingleFileZ version is 2.5MB. A major improvement! **The bad news**: when I click the link I get: > Error: cannot read the zip file. If you are using a chromium-based browser and trying to read the page from the filesystem, it must be started with the switch '--allow-file-access-from-files'. From the extension info, I thought this would only happen if trying to open the file via my file manager on my hard drive, but it happens when trying to open the online link via my browser. (Related to ZeroNet being localhost?) And it happens in both Vivaldi (Chromium-based) and Firefox too, despite the developer saying only Chromium-based browsers are affected. . As I doubt people are going to close their browser and restart it with that switch (if they even know how to) just to read one link, I think SingleFileZ is not a viable option for me. Pity :(

klu9@zeroid.bit commented on leftside's post: So the developer has made this because "traditional" SinglePage files don't work in some browsers? Anybody know which? The files work in every browser I've tried. (Vivaldi, Firefox, Chrome, K-Meleon, IE) . Of course, given [the type of content I'm saving to ZeroNet](http://127.0.0.1:43110/1Papers8S7fe6LEsa7BwVVywWVbMpUjgwx/), what I'd *really* like is a fork of SingleFile that automatically converts massive JPGs into WEBPs with similar visual quality but smaller file size. :)

Whooooosh! > What "takedown" are you actually talking about. The only zite you've used to my knowledge is KxoVid. Also, let's not lie about the fact that your data was deleted, because I've already been clear to people that it wasn't. Do you not know what "takedown" means in the context of disagreement / conflict? > Most people on here aren't native English speakers - you can't automatically assume the word "movies" to be specifically movies how native English speakers would call movies. I've seen people call videos movies. It's better to give too much information than not enough. Oh well, then that clearly justifies making half your answer a personal attack on me for giving them a list of sites that actually have movies. You score!!!! > Or do you mean when I said this after you kept continuing to tell me what to do and being condescending: > Right... except I actually need to setup my dev environment - which takes more time than I'm willing to do when I have more important things, so not problem solved - so how about stfu. All that came *after* the last comment I directed to you, so "you kept continuing" seems an odd way to phrase. > You can't mean longer than 2 years right... because I've only been on for 2 years. Admittedly I did fail to confess to and list the many terrible lies I have made up about you. No doubt you'll remedy my clearly malicious oversight for us? And perhaps give us the links so everyone can see these deliberate lies for themselves? . But honestly, I don't understand why you're bothered by what I wrote here: all I did was give links to *your* own words and give *your* own characterization of our interactions. Surely you should be *happy* that people can see for themselves what a big meanie I was to you, your suffering at my hands, and your brave resistance in the face of such atrocities. . For example, some lesser individual, some **coward**, would have let my answer to the question ["Hi I am looking for a site where can](http://127.0.0.1:43110/Me.ZeroNetwork.bit/?Post/1MoonP8t4rk9QamBUPh5Aspkwa1Xhf5ux2/1Fnk5S9aU2kCvTFtYMWosbE9NFaRjgeemo/1555930698) [present tense] [get movies](http://127.0.0.1:43110/Me.ZeroNetwork.bit/?Post/1MoonP8t4rk9QamBUPh5Aspkwa1Xhf5ux2/1Fnk5S9aU2kCvTFtYMWosbE9NFaRjgeemo/1555930698) [plural][?"](http://127.0.0.1:43110/Me.ZeroNetwork.bit/?Post/1MoonP8t4rk9QamBUPh5Aspkwa1Xhf5ux2/1Fnk5S9aU2kCvTFtYMWosbE9NFaRjgeemo/1555930698) slide, or just given some mealy-mouthed cop-out like "*There's also KxoVid and ShareTube, which don't have much content yet but hopefully will have more in the future.*" . Some **weakling** like that might have wimped out and preferred to tell themselves that I hadn't mentioned KxoVid and Sharetube in my answer because the last time I had checked those sites before writing that answer, Sharetube had only three videos total and no movies (unless one considers the Christchurch massacre video a movie) and KxoVid's Movies & TV category had just four videos (three of them not movies). . Only someone with unwavering courage and laser-like perception would see through my charade of a seemingly helpful response and call it out for what it *really* was, clearly a personal attack by me on you, and thus respond in kind and make half their answer "*- of course, klu9 already knew that, but chose not to tell you this (which is a deliberate disservice to you, imo - but of course he probably didn't like that I told him off for being a jerk, lol).*" (oh, and make the other half of their answer the availability of things that are, umm, **not** movies). . Only someone with admirable moral rectitude would have issued a devastating takedown of my awful and misleading attack, and taken some newb's simple request for info and, instead of merely answering it, turn it into a battlefield in your brave war against jerks like me. Just like the brave heroes in the movie *300*. You know *300*, right? It's the movie [singular] available on KxoVid (and, while I can understand why its name might confuse, is still actually just *one* movie [singular], and not, you know, three hundred movies). . Frankly ZeroNet, indeed, **the world** needs more people courageous enough to steam into any thread and start calling people "brainless" and "jerk" and telling them to "stfu" (and not meekly hold back from that just because the other people were simply **tricky** enough not to do it first.) And to take that war into other unrelated threads involving people who've got nothing to do with it. And do it all secure in the knowledge that it's all the other person's fault for their stupidity and their awfulness toward you and they're just getting what they deserve: **TRUTH**! . You've been doing it in threads long before I came onto ZeroNet. You've been doing it regularly while I've been on ZeroNet. And you'll be doing it long after I'm probably gone from ZeroNet. **Keep it up and stay strong!** . Poor, brave Krixano / KxoBot / whatever other name you're using beginning with a K. . . Wait a minute... *my* name begins with a K. Whoa! Am I in some ZeroNet version of *Fight Club*???

He then proceeds to tear up a sheet of paper into little pieces, and throws the pieces out of the back of the bus every few hundred yards/metres. . The other passengers notice this and are puzzled by it but say nothing. After a while of this going on, though, one finally screws up the courage and asks the man "Why do you keep throwing bits of paper out of the bus?" . "It keeps the elephants away," says the man matter-of-factly. . "But there *aren't* any elephants in London!" counters the surprised passenger. . And the man replies "See? It works!" --- A cheesy joke I heard when I was a little kid but for some reason always remembered. It was *years* before I finally realized: "Oh yeah! klu9@zeroid.bit commented on klu9@zeroid.bit's post: (And notice how IP lobbies' propaganda always talks about "creators", glossing over the fact that, by definition, intellectual *property* benefits *proprietors*, not *creators*.)
klu9@zeroid.bit commented on klu9@zeroid.bit's post: My main issue with copyrights & patents is not that they exist at all, but that certain lobbies have taken a short-term limitation (25 years in the beginning) that was originally created by government for the public benefit (to encourage promulgation of knowledge, back when that was uncertain and expensive) and turned it into a near-eternal (e.g. author's life + 75 years!) private benefit for rent seekers* (in an era when we've never had *less* need for expensive publishers/gatekeepers/middlemen getting their cut), and have sold governments on the idea that copyrights & patents are all about "justice" for "creators", with the principal of public benefit completely hijacked (only what's good for the IP lobbies is good for the public, apparently). --- *I say rent seekers, because often IP doesn't really benefit the actual creators but instead companies who didn't create anything, like patent trolls, or companies whose business model is centred around screwing over an unending conveyor belt of young & naive hopefuls. E.g. record companies with plentiful lawyers and years of institutional experience who get teenage musicians who don't know any better to sign multi-year contracts handing over their copyrights and/or royalties until their "investment" in the artist has been paid off. E.g. De La Soul's 1989 album "3 Feet High and Rising" isn't on Spotify because the band is pissed off that their old record company wants to garnish the band's (already miniscule) royalties from it, claiming De La Soul still owe them money on it... 3 ***decades*** after it was released and sold millions of copies, earning the record company a fortune in the process. (IIRC *The Empire Strikes Back* still hasn't technically made a profit, according to 20th Century Fox's accountants. So no profit sharing for the actors.) --- IMHO trademarks are not as big a problem, as they don't seem to restrict the public from using / enjoying *knowledge* (books, music, medicines, inventions etc); as far as I can tell, they mainly just stop shitty businesses capitalizing on the marketing imagery (logos, slogans, etc) of other businesses. But maybe there's a case against them too.

A drama but with strong elements of comedy (if you get all the Anglophone cultural references the main character makes) + Farscape ([My post about Farscape](http://127.0.0.1:43110/1NEuAUKgUoY6fnXeXBaonjrDfNbfpQpdMp/?Post:18:Farscape) ) And one scifi comedy movie recommendation that, like The Orville, is both a parody of Star Trek and also a love letter to it: + [Galaxy Quest](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galaxy_Quest)

klu9@zeroid.bit commented on caryoscelus's post: @Krixano: re Kiwipedia: what's your method for finding information on Kiwipedia? . At the moment, this is how it happens when I try it. 1. Open Kiwipedia. 2. Click on "Hub List". 3. Click on "en". 4. Click on "List of English Wikipedia Pages". 5. Wait until I remember that does nothing. 6. Click on "Article Index". 7. Wait. The page looks blank but will eventually show something. 8. Press CTRL+F and search. (Obviously this will only search article titles, not content). Go through results until finding the right one (if present). 9. If no result (likely), go to Wikipedia and repeat the process with fewer steps (i.e. use Wikipedia's search box). . Bookmarking "Article Index" would take care of steps 1-5. Are there other things I can do to make it easier to find info on Kiwipedia? I tried ZeroHello search (`xyz site:kiwipedia`) but that doesn't work.
klu9@zeroid.bit commented on caryoscelus's post: @Krixano: "*Examples: ZeroExchange, ZeroMedium, KxoVid, 0Play Game Center, Kiwipedia, ZPlace*" The utility of many of these zites is still based on having a critical mass of users, in turn attracting more users. . E.g. The other day I needed some info/help and I looked again at ZeroExchange (actually I've still got the tab open). And the zite had about 5 posts over a year. With the most "recent" being 4 months old. . (Also I clicked on the "About" page and it literally was just a page with a big "About Page!" written on it :) ) . So I asked on ZeroTalk, where I felt more confident I would get a response. I don't really know if ZeroExchange is better, per se, than ZeroTalk. But I do know ZT has much more activity from many more users. So I posted there because people post there. I.e. network effect. . Kiwipedia has additional issues: it was only on my 4th or 5th visit (I only returned because it kept nagging me for space) that I finally found that there's any actual content on it. I literally clicked every single damned link on the home page until I finally found something (buried two/three levels down under a small link called "Hub list"). They've made a few small changes to the home page since then, but there are so many basic usability flaws with Kiwipedia I find it useless. . And even if the design & usability issues were fixed, it would still, like Wikipedia, rely on a critical mass of contributors, providing, editing and updating content.

klu9@zeroid.bit commented on klu9@zeroid.bit's post: @Realjohndoe: I was actually impressed with how easy it was to get started with ZeroNet: I just downloaded the Windows bundle, unzipped and started browsing. And cloned a blog in seconds. No port forwarding required (what a relief!) . I thought "Shit, that was easy! Why did I put it off so long?!" So then the next day I tried I2P... that was *much* more like the tortuous rigamarole I was expecting from trying to get a decentralized / dark net up and running. I gave up after I2P killed even clearnet for me. . So for me, ZeroNet is easy. Although the devil, of course, is in the details: e.g. unexplained space limits, dealing with ZeroMe hubs etc.
klu9@zeroid.bit commented on Lostfile's post: @Lostfile: or do it like ZeroNet: send it to 5 (or some plural number) "post office peers", so that hopefully at least one of them will be online when the intended recipient comes back online. Then the message gets delivered, and the recipient's client sends out an instruction to delete it from the post office peers. . PS I'm not an expert, I don't know if this would cause a huge problem. Although I suspect it could mitigated by careful design, e.g. a limit on the size and number of offline messages allowed. . PPS I run 0net 24/7 **defiantly**! :)

So after just 5 weeks on ZeroMe I was getting "include too large" errors without understanding what they meant or why. I feel it should not be possible for someone to join ZeroMe without them at least being shown a page of brief explanation (about hubs, space etc) and being offered a list of hubs to choose from (with details like space limit etc). I visit the clearnet blog, adjusting browser width and scrolling through the whole page (in order to load maximum resolution images, as it's a "responsive design" page). 2. I save the page (at first using my browser's "save as .mhtml", now using [SingleFile](https://github.com/gildas-lormeau/SingleFile) browser extension) 3. I upload the resulting file to ZeroUpUnlimited. 4. I make a post about it on my blog, with a link to the file on ZeroUp Unlimited. . It's all very manual and dependent on my bothering to do it. I also [wondered about an archive-type site](http://127.0.0.1:43110/Talk.ZeroNetwork.bit/?Topic:1553707562_131Seivv6aH8vnohPmYPcPwPfZ1a5ubMMs/What+do+you+think+about+having+a+ZeroArchive+to+save+websites) on 0net, which is probably far too ambitious. . But if I understand you right, do you mean the inverse of a 0net proxy? A 0net zite that acts as a sort of intermediary which fetches and displays the clearnet articles you want but without you visiting them directly, with you staying within ZeroNet? klu9@zeroid.bit commented on klu9@zeroid.bit's post: @Krixano: I couldn't see videos there before the update, it's just that it didn't occur to me until now to try refreshing to see if that made a difference. Happens in Vivaldi. Just tried Firefox: + empty at first (like Vivaldi) + refresh gives a "Connection with UiServer Websocket was lost. Reconnecting..." message (unlike Vivaldi) + eventually reconnects and shows content (like Vivaldi) . Not sure if this is relevant: for the last few weeks, ZeroHello always reports: "Port: Closed" and "Tor: Error". I've been putting off dealing with that because every time I've ever tried port forwarding, I've lost hours of my life and failed miserably. . re "trending", how about as a temporary replacement/alternative "Latest"?
klu9@zeroid.bit commented on klu9@zeroid.bit's post: @Kaffie: Thanks! . I'm hoping that eventually: + I can have an automated way of doing this (a script? I noticed binchan's ones for ZeroTalk+RSS, and someone gave me one for full site mirroring with Wget but I'll probably only try these things after I've reformatted and installed Linux) + there will be a central location where all 0nauts who copy/archive clearnet news (I've seen others doing it too, in English and other languages) can post links to the 0net versions (e.g. maybe a clone of ZeroTalk, where people post links to their blog post or whatever is hosting the 0net version of the article). Maybe even a place where people could coordinate "adopting" a news source (e.g. "I'll do BBC Chinese, you do the FT" etc.) Then we can *all* get around geoblocking, censorship, paywalls, time limits or whatever else is restricting the news for us.

The New Wilderness

by Maciej Cegłowski
.
Drawing a parallel between dealing with problems of nature and privacy:

None of these [grave environmental harms like deadly smog, burning rivers and massive lead poisoning from petrol] could have been fixed by telling people to vote with their wallet, or carefully review the environmental policies of every company they gave their business to, or to stop using the technologies in question. It took coordinated, and sometimes highly technical, regulation across jurisdictional boundaries to fix them. In some cases, like the ban on commercial refrigerants that depleted the ozone layer, that regulation required a worldwide consensus.

We’re at the point where we need a similar shift in perspective in our privacy law. The infrastructure of mass surveillance is too complex, and the tech oligopoly too powerful, to make it meaningful to talk about individual consent. Even experts don’t have a full picture of the surveillance economy, in part because its beneficiaries are so secretive, and in part because the whole system is in flux. Telling people that they own their data, and should decide what to do with it, is just another way of disempowering them.

More on Telegram / Hong Kong protests:

The Guardian - Hong Kong's digital battle: tech that helped protesters now used against them

For the next eight hours, the police, with a warrant for [Telegram group member] Ip’s arrest on suspicion of conspiracy to cause a public nuisance, raided his room and questioned him at home and at the police station. After forcing him to unlock his phone and downloading chats from the group, they interrogated him about the group’s creator, the purpose of the forum, and whether Ip knew of other groups for planning “radical actions”.

Now, more protesters are keeping a low profile on social media, communicating only via secure messaging apps, deleting conversations related to the protests, and using pre-paid SIM cards not linked to their personal information. Wary of being tracked, others are disabling location tracking on their phones and buying paper subway tickets rather than using metro cards linked to their IDs.

@leftside: And not just Communist-looking ones; IIRC Iran has its "bazaar class"; in a country where business life is made very difficult by the govt, the few merchants who have the ability/permission to operate get very rich and raise the cost of living for ordinary people. And so the bazaar class support politicians who will keep things the way they are.

Communist governments or dictatorships like China and Russia used to commit war against their own citizens in order to protect the upper 0.001% elites' properties and pleasure.
They don't treat their people as the same human being as themselves but cattle or dogs which exist for the elites not for the animals' own sake.

@P2P: You're welcome. China has interested me since I was a kid, I studied Mandarin (a looong time ago, my Chinese is no good now) including a short time in Taibei 台北 (as mainland universities stopped accepting short-term foreign students right after the events of 1989/6/4) and until recently my work involved a lot of web-conferencing (in English) with people in mainland China.
.
@jaka: I think Pavel Durov has enough money and motivation to avoid that outcome (I presume that's a big part of why he left Russia) but the ruling elites could still block access to Telegram#Censorship); they already have in mainland China & Russia and I think Iran is still trying although many people there use circumvention tools. The govt there has even been pushing a local , obedient alternative messenger called Soroush.

BBC News - China social media: WeChat and the Surveillance State

BBC China correspondent tells of his experience getting locked out of his 微信 WeChat (all-in-one messaging / social media / payments app etc) account. After posting uncaptioned photos of Hong Kong Tiananmen 6/4 anniversary candlelight vigil on his WeChat Moments private feed (meaning WeChat is probably running some kind of automatic image analysis that flags if they are sensitive), his account was suspended on suspicion of "spreading malicious rumours".

He had to agree that he was guilty of spreading rumours and submit to a face and voice scan (which you know is going straight into a govt database of "rumour spreaders") to apply to get back in. And he really had to do it because living in China without WeChat is becoming an impossibility.

When you meet somebody in a work context they don't given you a name card [sic] any more, they share their WeChat; if you play for a football team training details are on WeChat; children's school arrangements, WeChat; Tinder-style dates, WeChat; movie tickets, WeChat; news stream, WeChat; restaurant locations, WeChat; paying for absolutely everything from a bowl of noodles to clothes to a dining room table… WeChat.

I used to have an account with Tencent (the company behind WeChat) but kept getting locked out, even though my content there was absolutely not political. They gave no info at all as to why they wouldn't let me into my account (in the end I think the "sync with Tencent" option I had activated on a third-party site was probably the trigger). Tencent would only give instructions for "have you lost your password?" which was not the case for me. The help options in English were a disgrace. Any other info was in Chinese (and lots of words there were actually images, making it hard to run through a translator). In the end, the only way I could get back in was to have someone in China do the process for me from a Chinese phone number.
.
The third time it happened, I just gave up on all things Tencent. But I could do that because I don't live there.

  • Proxies: how would I enable seeding of optional content?
  • Maybe I need to go back to hosting the files on ZeroUp Unlimited??? I don't know if that would make a difference.
  • Comment error: I have no idea why that's happening. Anybody know what to do about that?

@SSDifnskdjfnsdjk: How'bout the File write error: when trying to comment??

SSDifnskdjfnsdjk · ssdifnskdjfnsdjk@zeroid.biton Jun 09, 2019Reply

yes for me too, it is possibly because in Klu9's main content.json are data/papers files marked as optional:
"optional": "data/img/.|data/papers/.",
_
and so very low amount of people have that file.. maybe klu9 consider making it mandatory, or trying to host his site on proxies and enable seeding of all content on them.

Logic Issue 07 - China 中国

The latest issue of Logic ("a magazine about technology") is dedicated to China.

The “world’s factory” has long been patronized as a place of copying, rather than creativity. But in fact, since its founding, the People’s Republic has been driven by dreams of rapid modernization and innovation, with engineers turned politicians drafting policy at Zhongnanhai. Apps in China now operate at scales American entrepreneurs only dream of.

Our China issue explores the situation on the ground, from biometric surveillance of Muslims in Xinjiang to the new global map that Chinese tech is drawing.

Yeah, but no mention of copyright whatsoever. As if it isn't (wasn't?) the main source of government "regulation" in the less authoritarian countries

The same goes about most internet freedom assessments.

It's ok to put it to lower priority, but considering that copyright (as well as terrorism, pornography and what not) takedowns (or worse) "do not count" doesn't make any sense to me

It's a pity they don't really write much interesting there. PRC & Russia's governments and other govs who look up to those have pretty obvious inclination to shut down free internet. But what many popular articles conveniently overlook is that many western governments have been invading internet for a long time, even if on other pretexts (usually copyright) and utilizing different methods (perhaps more fine-grained shutting down real servers/putting people responsible for those into prisons vs mass blocking).

..I wish they'd be an actual, unbiased and detailed list of free-internet-friendly countries

Then a monkey started calling out. "Bloody hell! A whole menagerie in there!" I thought, and I started strolling towards the clinic door to take a peek inside. Just before I got there, the monkey stopped and a mobile phone started ringing. And then I saw where all the noise was coming from: a parrot just inside the door, with a small "I'm not for sale" sign on its cage, who went back to doing the feline meowing when I arrived. :D

April 26th: I'm sure everyone here has remembered to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day... right?
This year's theme: Reach for Gold: IP & Sports. Suggested activities include:

  • Put on public performances on the World IP Day theme, with the performers delivering messages which encourage respect for creators and creativity.
  • Run essay competitions for young people on themes relating to IP, innovation, piracy and counterfeiting, etc.
  • create a spokes-character.
  • Explain the role of IP in the world of sport at a grassroots sport event.

And saving the most fun for last:

  • Have an "open doors" day in the local IP or copyright office.

Delight your friends by sending them a World Intellectual Property Day postcard! It's what all the kids are doing these days!

KxoBot · kxobot@zeroid.biton Apr 26, 2019Reply

@klu9@zeroid.bit: I actually agree with you on much of what you've said.

klu9@zeroid.bit · klu9@zeroid.biton Apr 26, 2019Reply

(And notice how IP lobbies' propaganda always talks about "creators", glossing over the fact that, by definition, intellectual property benefits proprietors, not creators.)

klu9@zeroid.bit · klu9@zeroid.biton Apr 26, 2019Reply

My main issue with copyrights & patents is not that they exist at all, but that certain lobbies have taken a short-term limitation (25 years in the beginning) that was originally created by government for the public benefit (to encourage promulgation of knowledge, back when that was uncertain and expensive) and turned it into a near-eternal (e.g. author's life + 75 years!) private benefit for rent seekers (in an era when we've never had less* need for expensive publishers/gatekeepers/middlemen getting their cut), and have sold governments on the idea that copyrights & patents are all about "justice" for "creators", with the principal of public benefit completely hijacked (only what's good for the IP lobbies is good for the public, apparently).

*I say rent seekers, because often IP doesn't really benefit the actual creators but instead companies who didn't create anything, like patent trolls, or companies whose business model is centred around screwing over an unending conveyor belt of young & naive hopefuls. E.g. record companies with plentiful lawyers and years of institutional experience who get teenage musicians who don't know any better to sign multi-year contracts handing over their copyrights and/or royalties until their "investment" in the artist has been paid off.

E.g. De La Soul's 1989 album "3 Feet High and Rising" isn't on Spotify because the band is pissed off that their old record company wants to garnish the band's (already miniscule) royalties from it, claiming De La Soul still owe them money on it... 3 decades after it was released and sold millions of copies, earning the record company a fortune in the process. (IIRC The Empire Strikes Back still hasn't technically made a profit, according to 20th Century Fox's accountants. So no profit sharing for the actors.)

IMHO trademarks are not as big a problem, as they don't seem to restrict the public from using / enjoying knowledge (books, music, medicines, inventions etc); as far as I can tell, they mainly just stop shitty businesses capitalizing on the marketing imagery (logos, slogans, etc) of other businesses. But maybe there's a case against them too.

KxoBot · kxobot@zeroid.biton Apr 26, 2019Reply

People should understand that copyright is different than trademarks and patents. I support some level of copyright, but I don't support patents. I haven't made my mind up about trademarks yet.

  • I realize I'd forgotten to try a proxy. I tried. Proxy shows the same:

    No posts yet

    Let's follow some users!

    • Click on user profile in proxy, shows same message.
  • Is ZeroHello search finding phantom posts? Ones that were deleted? Can other people see those posts or do they get the same "No posts yet" message?

if proxies does NOT have this problem, then what about trying to visit author of the post (not comment but post) profile zerome page and see if you can download his profile? (no post, but kind of download button)? If you see his posts, you have his hub downloaded so nothing alse is needed. So i would try to go to ZeroMe open this site menu (corner button moving to the left), and reload + rebuild site's database. Make sure you have that particular zerome hub active (resumed, not paused) and up to date?

Public proxies tend to allow adding new sites. If one proxy is not updated, check another one?..

Also, if in doubt, throwing another "sign and publish" should show whether you can push content at least to some peers. Now with optional content it's a little bit harder: unless you access it with proxy, there is little way to know for sure whether someone else will be able to download it at any given time (especially if you use tor-only mode or no tor and port closed; or if you don't have your node up all time). Though if you have an open port + tor node that runs 24/7, optional content shouldn't be a problem

@klu9@zeroid.bit:

it shows up in my ZeroHello feed as a published post

0hello shows everything that went into your local database, which afair doesn't even require signing, just changing related .json is enough.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Most likely just not enough peers at the moment of publication. Maybe try again?

If that doesn't help: is update timestamp (can be seen on 0hello near site) current or still shows yesterday? Did you get "content signed, but no peers found message"? Did you see console output / logs?

Can anyone lists the advantages (and disadvantages, if any) / features of the alternative interfaces for ZeroMe:

  • Peeper
  • Sakana
  • ZeroMe Reloaded
  • ZeroMe Plus
klu9@zeroid.bit · klu9@zeroid.biton Apr 21, 2019Reply

@Kxobot: Testing...

  • favicon: Of top 15 hits, 10 are from Peeper. No results from Zerome anywhere on page.
  • favicon site:ZeroMe: Results from ZeroMe! The same posts that are on Peeper and were shown in the general search.

Weird. I guess it can mean having to search twice: once to find results from all over ZeroNet, and a second time to access ZeroMe content (because sometimes when I click on a search result from Peeper, a Peeper page will open but the content won't appear). Content does appear on Peeper, it seems I just need to give it more time to load.

30 years ago tonight:

Starting on the night of 17 April, three thousand [Peking University] students marched from the campus towards Tiananmen Square, and soon nearly a thousand students from Tsinghua [University] joined. Upon arrival, they soon joined forces with those already gathered at the Square. As its size grew, the gathering gradually evolved into a protest, as students began to draft a list of pleas and suggestions (Seven Demands) for the government:

  1. Affirm Hu Yaobang's views on democracy and freedom as correct.
  2. Admit that the campaigns against spiritual pollution and bourgeois liberalization had been wrong.
  3. Publish information on the income of state leaders and their family members.
  4. Allow privately run newspapers and stop press censorship.
  5. Increase funding for education and raise intellectuals' pay.
  6. End restrictions on demonstrations in Beijing.
  7. Provide objective coverage of students in official media.

in democratic country such demands seems good, but in communist China i bet the demand for uncensored press and allowed demonstrations is like demanding the party resign and establish democratic elections.

@klu9@zeroid.bit: Good analysis of Zeronet. I was also shocked at how easy it was to setup on Windows. It basically does everything for you. Including taking you to set up your first Zeronet ID.

"Cumbersome" may not have been the right word to use. It's very powerful, and like Bitcoin it takes a lot of thought and exploration to fully grasp and exploit its power.

It's not a simple one-dimensional service like Facebook or Twitter. Zeronet is much more..👍😀

Retroshare does an excellent job of integrating with both I2p and Tor. I also run i2p on my android phone, alongside K-9 Mail as a backup email experiment. Both work beautifully.

I2p also works beautifully with Thunderbird on Windows as a further email backup. I also like Retroshare chat app on Android. It can connect with the windows clients through I2p or Orbot, or without.

See, I warned you I was a geek. A real one..😂

@Realjohndoe: I was actually impressed with how easy it was to get started with ZeroNet: I just downloaded the Windows bundle, unzipped and started browsing. And cloned a blog in seconds. No port forwarding required (what a relief!)
.
I thought "Shit, that was easy! Why did I put it off so long?!" So then the next day I tried I2P... that was much more like the tortuous rigamarole I was expecting from trying to get a decentralized / dark net up and running. I gave up after I2P killed even clearnet for me.
.
So for me, ZeroNet is easy. Although the devil, of course, is in the details: e.g. unexplained space limits, dealing with ZeroMe hubs etc.

@klu9@zeroid.bit: The thing is, 0net is still a bit cumbersome to use. But that will improve with time.

As 0net evolves, I can see Zeronet being used in combination with a more matured decentralized service like Retroshare.

That's not to say that Retroshare is better than 0net. It's not. They actually complement each other.

I can even see 0net used in combination with centralized and federated platforms. Giving them a new life.

Zeronet may evolve into a kind of universal hub. An internet presence for everyone. An Internet presence that's always available. That you can't take down or censor.

A place your followers on the FakeNet can always find you, and update your status. So that no service can make you their Bitch!..👍😅 ##Bitches!!! 😈😂

p.s. I'm really excited to see how many of the services I can effectively Implement under Linux Deploy on my smartphone and tablet..👍😀

I wish I could like see a video or something... Also, it'd be helpful if you opened the Developer Tools in the video (or a screenshot) (You can do this by pressing Ctrl+Shift+I).

klu9@zeroid.bit · klu9@zeroid.biton Apr 06, 2019Reply

@Krixano: I couldn't see videos there before the update, it's just that it didn't occur to me until now to try refreshing to see if that made a difference. Happens in Vivaldi. Just tried Firefox:

  • empty at first (like Vivaldi)
  • refresh gives a "Connection with UiServer Websocket was lost. Reconnecting..." message (unlike Vivaldi)
  • eventually reconnects and shows content (like Vivaldi)

.

Krixano · krixano@zeroid.biton Apr 05, 2019Reply

@klu9@zeroid.bit: The embedded video on your blog works for me.
Btw, to clarify, I sometimes interchange Categories and Hubs. In KxoVid, Categories are hubs. They are just hubs based on a category. So they are like ZeroMe hubs, the only difference is your profile isn't attached to a hub - only the videos you put in that hub are (this has many benefits, which is why I did it this way - I also think this was ZeroMe's biggest mistake to not do it like this, but yeah...)
.
About the videos not showing until refresh - that's weird. I'll have to look into this, because I haven't experienced this even when I tested on a proxy (zn.amorgan.xyz is the ZeroNet proxy I use, by @zerolstn). Did it just start doing this after my update? Or was it doing it before this update?
.
I know about the Trending page - it's not done yet. I just thought of an idea on how to make it work the way I want to, so I may get to developing it soon.

klu9@zeroid.bit · klu9@zeroid.biton Apr 04, 2019Reply

@Krixano: re hubs, cool!
.
Btw I can see the video in my Seedbox immediately, but user channels (inc. my own) and Categories always report no videos, no playlists until I refresh the page. Only then does content appear.
And clicking on "Trending" does nothing for me.

Krixano · krixano@zeroid.biton Apr 04, 2019Reply

Yay! Thanks for using KxoVid! Btw, I'm going to work out how to solve telling the user what hub to download if they don't already have the hub - it's a bit complicated and there's multiple ways I could do it (just need to find the best option).

klu9@zeroid.bit · klu9@zeroid.biton Apr 04, 2019Reply

I've also embedded the video in my blog post here http://127.0.0.1:43110/1NEuAUKgUoY6fnXeXBaonjrDfNbfpQpdMp/?Post:18:Farscape
Hopefully the embedding works for people.

@Kaffie: Had some discussion about RSS mirroring (Binchan has some scripts for it) in this thread. I haven't got around to trying anything like that yet because:

  • The thing that first got me to take action is this temporary image-based news blog, whose RSS only gives a one-sentence summary and two thumbnails.
  • I'm still learning the basics of just being on 0net and having a single-user blog.

As I don't know yet how to do things like running a multi-user, multi-hub site, mergers, optional files etc, I thought of a forum where each person posts links to content on their own zites as a sort of "federation for idiots" workaround :)

Kaffie · kaffie@zeroid.biton Apr 07, 2019Reply

@klu9@zeroid.bit: Just automated mirroring of RSS+text content would be a great start. The problem is always "have to go to clearnet to read news" which is pretty awful. We need a ZN solution.

Ideal would be each news site having it's own hub, and then a merger letting you download+read what sites you want.

klu9@zeroid.bit · klu9@zeroid.biton Apr 06, 2019Reply

@Kaffie: Thanks!
.
I'm hoping that eventually:

  • I can have an automated way of doing this (a script? I noticed binchan's ones for ZeroTalk+RSS, and someone gave me one for full site mirroring with Wget but I'll probably only try these things after I've reformatted and installed Linux)
  • there will be a central location where all 0nauts who copy/archive clearnet news (I've seen others doing it too, in English and other languages) can post links to the 0net versions (e.g. maybe a clone of ZeroTalk, where people post links to their blog post or whatever is hosting the 0net version of the article).
Maybe even a place where people could coordinate "adopting" a news source (e.g. "I'll do BBC Chinese, you do the FT" etc.)

Then we can all get around geoblocking, censorship, paywalls, time limits or whatever else is restricting the news for us.

Kaffie · kaffie@zeroid.biton Apr 05, 2019Reply

It's very exciting that you're taking the time to do this. Getting news onto zeronet is pretty important. It's critical to finally being able to get off of the clearnet and be 100% ZN.

More clearnet / walled garden / DRM / copyright shenanigans:

I tried creating a web browser, and Google blocked me

For the last 2 years I’ve been working on a web browser that now cannot be completed because Google, the creators of the open source browser Chrome, won’t allow DRM in an open source project.

He's creating an Electron/Chromium-based browser, Metastream specifically for people in different places to watch videos synchronized (e.g. Netflix).
.
But that requires DRM (digital rights management), and the only DRM provider for Chromium is... Google-owned Widevine.
.
So even if you fork the open-source Chromium, you can't make a competing browser that does multimedia unless Google/Widevine chooses to give you a DRM licence. And if they don't, tough shit.

klu9@zeroid.bit · klu9@zeroid.biton Apr 04, 2019Reply

@Pigpog: DRM is shit, but as the whole point of the browser is synchronized watching of streaming media (e.g. Netflix, Hulu), the project is crippled without a DRM license. Unless he scales down his target market to just people interested in simultaneously watching Creative Commons & public domain videos.

Pigpog · pigpog@zeroid.biton Apr 04, 2019Reply

fuck DRM, the project can totally continue without it.

@ulrichard: The most recent thing I saw her in was tv sitcom Blue Mountain State (2010-11).
.
I think she's:

  1. been more focused on raising her kids (and keeping them safe from their father)
  2. got older, and Hollywood like females stars to be pretty and young (I didn't realize but she was already 27 when Wild Things came out.)

My favourite thing with her (but not because of her): Starship Troopers. Would you like to know more?

BBC Future - Why there's so little left of the early internet

A look at the worldwide web and its content being lost, like AOL and MySpace deleting or losing years-worth of posts, and archival efforts by the Internet Archive (which didn't wait for permission from site owners and so saved a lot that would have been lost) and the UK Web Archive by the British Library (which does ask for permission before archiving).

“Putting your photos on Facebook is not archiving them, because one day Facebook won’t exist,” says Webber. If you have any doubt about the temporary nature of the Web, take a few minutes to trawl through the Million Dollar Homepage. It is the testament to how quickly our online past is fading away.

There is another side to data loss. Dame Wendy points out that not archiving stories from news websites could lead to a selective view of history – new governments choosing not to save stories or archives which have cast them in a poor light, for instance

My own small effort: saving and sharing newspaper front pages onto ZeroNet.

Quantumworld · quantumworld@zeroid.biton Apr 03, 2019Reply

Zeronet is like the early Internet. So those that get on this platform now may be the big guys in the future.

Kinda funny how you think back about how cool computers were back in the day. Then you dig one out and use it and after about 4 hours you are like Ewwww..
Then you box up the computer and stick it back up in the attic. I think we all need that Ewww effect to appreciate the Garbage we user now for computers.
Now that everyone is Bugged and monitored for political and social conditioning by the CCP world wide. Its only a matter of time that we are all going to be shot in the back of the head. (Remember stay positive) (Some Sarcasum included.)
