California Fights Back

When Donald Trump threatened on the campaign trail to deport every single immigrant living in the country illegally, bring back offshore drilling and reverse the anti-pollution policies that help clear smoggy skies, Californians immediately understood that our state would be disproportionately affected — and disproportionately harmed — by the reckless policies he was hoping to enact. After he was sworn in, he went further, singling out the state for attack. “California,” Trump declared in February, “in many ways is out of control.” In one overwrought tweet, he suggested that the federal government should cut all funding for UC Berkeley because a protest against a conservative guest speaker had turned violent. A few days later, he declared — even more irresponsibly — that he would “defund” the entire state if he felt it wasn’t cooperating sufficiently in his efforts to root out undocumented immigrants.

Conspiracy Theorist in Chief

It was bad enough back in 2011 when Donald Trump began peddling the crackpot conspiracy theory that President Barack Obama was not a native-born American. But at least Trump was just a private citizen then. By the time he tweeted last month that Obama had sunk so low as to “tapp [sic] my phones during the very sacred election process,” Trump was a sitting president accusing a predecessor of what would have been an impeachable offense.

U.S. To Lose $1.6B As Mexican Vacationers Choose Canada

The American tourism industry could be facing a new phenomenon: waning interest in the traveling to the United States. After decades of sitting pretty as a bucket list destination, the stars and stripes might be on their way out. Experts warn that anti-immigration rhetoric as well as confusing travel and electronic bans have dampened foreign interest in U.S. vacations, especially from Mexico.

The GOP's 2nd Attempt to Destroy Our Health Care System Is Falling Apart More Quickly Than the First

President Donald Trump may have told NBC News on Monday that he is serious about reviving health care reform, but early reports suggest that the second attempt at a repeal-and-replace bill for the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, isn’t going much better than the initial effort.

Kelly: No border wall 'from sea to shining sea'

Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said Wednesday it is "unlikely" that the Trump administration will build a full wall along the entire Southern border, despite President Donald Trump's consistent promises to that effect. "It is unlikely that we will build a wall, a physical barrier, from sea to shining sea," Kelly told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Wednesday morning.

National embarrassment: A majority of Americans don’t like having Donald Trump as president, and his wall isn’t helping him

A majority of voters in the U.S. are embarrassed to have Donald Trump as their president, according to a new Quinnipiac University poll released on Tuesday. Fifty-two percent of voters said they were embarrassed that Trump is leading the nation, while only 27 percent stated they were proud. Trump also appears to be losing popularity within key factions of his voter base — men and white people. Fifty-one percent of white male voters and 48 percent of all white voters polled said they disapprove of the way Trump is handling his new job. In total, only 35 percent approve of Trump’s handling of the presidency, while 57 percent said they disapprove.

Trump’s War on Journalism

In Donald Trump’s America, the mere act of reporting news unflattering to the president is held up as evidence of bias. Journalists are slandered as “enemies of the people.” Facts that contradict Trump’s version of reality are dismissed as “fake news.” Reporters and their news organizations are “pathetic,” “very dishonest,” “failing,” and even, in one memorable turn of phrase, "a pile of garbage.”

Visitors to the U.S. may have to hand over their phones and Facebook passwords before they get a visa

Coming to America? You may have to hand over your phone — and your Facebook password — before you do. The Trump administration may ask visa applicants to hand over their phones, along with social media logins and passwords, the Wall Street Journal reports. It’s part of the “extreme vetting” for visitors to the U.S. Trump promised during his campaign. Trump officials previously floated the idea this year. But at the time, they planned on scrutinizing visitors from majority-Muslim countries. Now, the WSJ says, “the changes could apply to people from all over the world, including allies like France and Germany.

Trump’s Authoritarian Vision

Standing before the cheering throngs at the Republican National Convention last summer, Donald Trump bemoaned how special interests had rigged the country’s politics and its economy, leaving Americans victimized by unfair trade deals, incompetent bureaucrats and spineless leaders. He swooped into politics, he declared, to subvert the powerful and rescue those who cannot defend themselves. “Nobody knows the system better than me, which is why I alone can fix it.” To Trump’s faithful, those words were a rallying cry. But his critics heard something far more menacing in them: a dangerously authoritarian vision of the presidency — one that would crop up time and again as he talked about overruling generals, disregarding international law, ordering soldiers to commit war crimes, jailing his opponent.

Robert Redford compares Trump to Nixon in Watergate warning

Robert Redford has said that Donald Trump has taken Richard Nixon’s attacks on journalism to “new and dangerous heights”, in a column written for the Washington Post. In the article, titled 45 Years After Watergate, the Truth Is Again in Danger, the actor writes of his concerns that, if a political scandal similar to the one that brought down Nixon occurred today, it might not be “navigated” as well due to the public’s “tenuous grasp on truth”. Redford is more familiar than most with Watergate. In 1976 he played Post journalist Bob Woodward in All the President’s Men, Alan J Pakula’s film about the attempts by Woodward and Carl Bernstein (played by Dustin Hoffman) to investigate the scandal that would ultimately force Nixon to resign from the presidency.

Protesting Trump's immigration policy? You might be accidentally helping him

An awkward question has begun to nag opponents of Donald Trump’s immigration policies: is the resistance inadvertently helping the administration? Few say it publicly but there is concern that the rallies and marches, alerts and tweets, workshops and press releases are helping the administration sow fear among undocumented immigrants. The spectre of deportation so haunts communities across the United States that some people are afraid to report crimes and others have reportedly decided to return to Mexico and Central America before they get swept up.

Federal judge rules President Trump incited violence at rally as candidate

A Kentucky Federal Judge refused to dismiss the claim from three protesters at a 2016 Trump rally that then-candidate Trump, provoked violence with his rhetoric to have them removed. U. S. District Judge David J. Hale ruled in a March 31 opinion that he is rejecting requests from Trump and his supporters named as defendants in the case to dismiss the charges brought by three rally protesters because there was precedent of violence at previous Trump rallies and Trump was inciting violence by ordering the removal of protesters.

Why Trump lies

Donald Trump did not invent the lie and is not even its master. Lies have oozed out of the White House for more than two centuries and out of politicians’ mouths — out of all people’s mouths — likely as long as there has been human speech. But amid all those lies, told to ourselves and to one another in order to amass power, woo lovers, hurt enemies and shield ourselves against the often glaring discomfort of reality, humanity has always had an abiding respect for truth. In the United States, born and periodically reborn out of the repeated recognition and rejection of the age-old lie that some people are meant to take dominion over others, truth is as vital a part of the civic, social and intellectual culture as justice and liberty. Our civilization is premised on the conviction that such a thing as truth exists, that it is knowable, that it is verifiable, that it exists independently of authority or popularity and that at some point — and preferably sooner rather than later — it will prevail. Even American leaders who lie generally know the difference between their statements and the truth. Richard Nixon said “I am not a crook” but by that point must have seen that he was. Bill Clinton said “I did not have sexual relations with that woman” but knew that he did.

Our Dishonest President

It was no secret during the campaign that Donald Trump was a narcissist and a demagogue who used fear and dishonesty to appeal to the worst in American voters. The Times called him unprepared and unsuited for the job he was seeking, and said his election would be a “catastrophe.” Still, nothing prepared us for the magnitude of this train wreck. Like millions of other Americans, we clung to a slim hope that the new president would turn out to be all noise and bluster, or that the people around him in the White House would act as a check on his worst instincts, or that he would be sobered and transformed by the awesome responsibilities of office. Instead, seventy-some days in — and with about 1,400 to go before his term is completed — it is increasingly clear that those hopes were misplaced. In a matter of weeks, President Trump has taken dozens of real-life steps that, if they are not reversed, will rip families apart, foul rivers and pollute the air, intensify the calamitous effects of climate change and profoundly weaken the system of American public education for all. His attempt to de-insure millions of people who had finally received healthcare coverage and, along the way, enact a massive transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich has been put on hold for the moment. But he is proceeding with his efforts to defang the government’s regulatory agencies and bloat the Pentagon’s budget even as he supposedly retreats from the global stage.

Donald Trump’s Approval Ratings Are So Low, He Wants Advice from Melania

Melania Trump’s approval rating is so much higher than her husband's that the president has joked that he could seek her out for advice. While Donald Trump has continued to set record lows for approval ratings of a new president, his wife Melania has seen a sharp rise in popularity since becoming first lady. More than half, 52 percent, of Americans indicated they have a favorable opinion of her in a CNN/ORC poll released earlier this month, up 16 percent from before her husband’s inauguration. The president, meanwhile, saw his approval rating slip to 35 percent in a Gallup tracking poll Tuesday, by some distance the lowest figure recorded by any president at this stage of their first term since before Dwight Eisenhower.

Can President Trump Handle the Truth?

Generations of American children have learned the apocryphal tale of young George Washington, bravely admitting to his father that he chopped down the cherry tree. The story sprang from a culture that wanted even its fables to serve the ideal of truth. By that standard, the House Intelligence Committee hearing on March 20 should have been a massive humiliation for the President, who followed Washington 228 years later. It is rare for such hearings to be unclassified--and thus televised--but FBI Director James Comey found the largest possible audience for his rebuke of the sitting President.

Former Colorado GOP chairman who accused Democrats of voter fraud arrested for voter fraud

The former chairman of Colorado’s Republican Party, who just last year suggested on his “Wake Up!” talk radio show that Democrats were largely to blame for fraudulent votes, has been charged with voter fraud and forgery. According to the Weld County District Attorney’s office, Curtis allegedly filed out his ex-wife’s absentee ballot for last year’s presidential election after it had been sent to his house and forged her signature. He was charged with one count of misdemeanor voter fraud and one count of forgery, a Class 5 felony, according to local media. Donald Trump is short on votes to pass Obamacare replacement bill through House

The Trump administration is currently short the votes needed to repeal and replace on Obamacare in a vote that could define Donald Trump's presidency. More than 25 members of the deeply conservative Republican Freedom Caucus in US House of Representatives are set to vote ‘no’ on the American Health Care Act. Mr Trump had promised several times during his campaign and in the first few months of his presidency to repeal the healthcare plan and replace it with one that was not a "disaster." The vote is set to take place on 23 March. With expected absences, the Trump administration will need 215 votes to pass and could only really afford 22 Republicans to defect from the party line.

Trump Wants to Cut Public Broadcasting — Where Mike Pence’s Daughter Got Her Start as a Filmmaker

One of the more shocking elements of President Trump’s proposed 2018 budget is his suggestion to eliminate all $455 million in federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which provides support for public television and radio stations across the country. This has been widely depicted as a threat to Sesame Street. But the real losers would be local stations in areas outside big coastal cities, which wouldn’t be able to make up for the budget hit with private support. Viewers would lose out on public affairs and local programming — while creative professionals who ply their trade outside of New York or Los Angeles would no longer have an outlet for their unique skills. A good example of someone who used public broadcasting to support early career development is the daughter of Vice President Mike Pence.

Trump's problem with truth

"Believe Me." Donald Trump wore those words out as a candidate as he beseeched voters to buy into his grand plans and promises on everything from crushing ISIS to building a great border wall. Now, the question of whether Americans can trust Trump is again a dominant political theme after he was caught in a lie over claims that he was wiretapped by his predecessor Barack Obama. Trump's repudiation by FBI Director James Comey in a sensational hearing Monday came exactly two months into an administration unusually prone to obfuscation, blurring facts and peddling falsehoods. From false assessments of the size of his inaugural crowd and claims that millions of illegal voters dealt him defeat in the popular vote in November, the President has often seemed happy to propagate conspiracy theories.

Giving New York the “shaft”: Newspapers blast GOP for Trumpcare loophole that could create massive deficits

The Republican Party’s repeal-and-replace bill for Obamacare, which has been showing signs of collapsing since as early as last week, is now facing a particularly harsh backlash from President Donald Trump’s home state of New York. The deal, which the Center for American Progress observed would “blow a $2 billion hole in the state budget,” has caused New Yorkers to line up to register their outrage. CAP also pointed out that the earmark specifically for New York negotiated by some of the state’s GOP congressmen would force the state “to make up for this gap with massive cuts to state spending on county aid and other programs.”

White House refuses to attend international meeting to discuss human rights

The US pulled out of a international meeting that was to examine the potential impact on human rights of Donald Trump’s executive orders targeting refugees and immigrants. The hearing of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) was called following concerns about the impact of three executive orders signed by Mr Trump, including a plan to build a wall on the US-Mexico border. Trump asked blacks, ‘What do you have to lose?’ He’s about to find out.

Candidate Donald Trump loved to ask African Americans (in front of overwhelmingly white audiences), “What do you have to lose?” President Trump will find out the answer Wednesday. That’s when he will meet with the Congressional Black Caucus at the White House for the first time. He’s so not going to like their answer.

‘You got swamped’: Schwarzenegger calls out Trump’s low approval rating

Add another chapter to the ongoing star war between President Trump and Arnold Schwarzenegger. By way of dimly-lit video shot from an urban waterfront, Schwarzenegger mocked the president’s low approval ratings via Twitter on Tuesday. The former California governor and actor was not above tossing a few barbs in the president’s direction. “Donald, the ratings are in, and you got swamped,” said Schwarzenegger, a Republican but not a Trump supporter. “Wow. Now you’re in the 30s?” Trump’s daily approval rating, per the Gallup poll, hit just 37 percent over the weekend. It marked a new floor for the young presidency and was, in the context of past presidents, dismal. The approval rating was “lower than Barack Obama experienced at any point over the course of his presidency,” as The Washington Post’s Philip Bump pointed out.

Michael Moore calls on Democrats to declare ‘national emergency’ to stop Donald Trump

‘For the first time in our history, the President of the United States and his staff are under investigation for espionage’ he claims. Filmmaker Michael Moore has called on the Democratic Party in America to declare a national emergency, following the revelation that Donald Trump and his staff are being investigated by the FBI. FBI director James Comey confirmed this week that investigators are looking at alleged interference by Russia in the 2016 election, and any possible ties between Russia and Mr Trump’s campaign team. Writing on Instagram, Mr Moore has called for all business with Mr Trump to be halted, including decisions on legislation and confirmation of nominees to positions of public office, while he is under investigation.

Fox News commentator Andrew Napolitano suspended after his latest conspiracy theory embarrasses the world

Fox News has been suspended its legal affairs commentator Andrew Napolitano after his uncorroborated allegation that former President Barack Obama used the U.K.’s spying operation to monitor President Donald Trump provoked an international incident. Napolitano’s claim, which he first made a week ago on an episode of “Fox & Friends,” was quickly picked up and repeated by White House press secretary Sean Spicer and later the president himself.

Reince Priebus should resign

Yesterday’s testimony from FBI Director James Comey, about an ongoing criminal investigation of links between the Trump campaign and Russian interference in the 2016 election, has cast a black cloud over the White House. But in the case of White House chief of staff Reince Preibus, the impact is even more direct: Comey’s testimony strongly suggests that Priebus has not only repeatedly lied to the American people, but also that he may have obstructed justice.

Trump Organisation in violation of New York City law after failing to register Trump Tower with authorities

Donald Trump’s business has breached New York City law because it failed to register Trump Tower with the city’s department of housing. The Trump Organisation, which has a $100 million (£80.1 million) mortgage on Trump Tower, failed to renew its annual registration with the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development after it expired in September 2016. Failing to renew the registration of properties with the housing authorities can result in a fine of up to $500 (£400), and revokes some of the rights enjoyed by property owners.

Donald Trump’s policy on leaks is highly hypocritical

Donald Trump is on a crusade to stop leaks. But not all leaks. As he clings to the unsubstantiated claim that President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower during the campaign — a claim with “no information that supports” it, according to congressional testimony Monday by FBI Director James B. Comey — it is worth remembering that news reports the White House has cited to bolster Trump's accusation are based on … leaks. Trump seems not to mind disclosures that help him push a narrative; he just hates ones that work against his preferred narratives. The president's inconsistency suggests that his opposition to leaks is more about politics than principle and that what he really wants to end is the flow of unflattering information.

Sean Spicer attacks New York Times for 'made up' story criticising Donald Trump's tweets

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer has reacted angrily to an article which suggested that he was one of a number of Donald Trump's staff that were getting tired of defending him. How the White House Got James Comey Wrong

Early on Monday morning, a couple of hours before the start of the first House Intelligence Committee hearing on Russia’s involvement in the Presidential election, one of Donald Trump’s closest White House advisers made a startling—and completely erroneous—prediction: James Comey, the F.B.I. director, would testify that there was no collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. “The Russian collusion thing has always been bullshit,” the official said. “I think Comey will come down and say there absolutely was no contact, collusion, or anything like that with the campaign.”

Donald Trump faces up to hard truths after FBI director James Comey labels his wiretapping claims false

On the 60th day of his presidency came the hardest truth for Donald Trump. He was wrong. James B. Comey - the FBI director whom Trump celebrated on the campaign trail as a gutsy and honourable “Crooked Hillary” truth-teller - testified under oath Monday what many Americans had already assumed: Trump had falsely accused his predecessor of wiretapping his headquarters during last year’s campaign. Trump did not merely allege that former president Barack Obama ordered surveillance on Trump Tower, of course. He asserted it as fact, and then reasserted it, and then insisted that forthcoming evidence would prove him right.

US police chiefs denounce Donald Trump illegal immigration crackdown in open letter

An alliance of 61 police chiefs have criticised the enforcement of Donald Trump’s immigration policies and are pleading for a change of tact. In an open letter, the senior figures explain that if local police perform the “federal government’s” job by enforcing deportations, it will create "harm" in their communities. Mr Trump has pledged to bring in local police forces to help with deporting millions of undocumented immigrants.

Stephen Colbert annotated Trump’s speech — and destroyed Kellyanne Conway in the process

After President Trump's first big speech to Congress, Stephen Colbert hosted a live broadcast of “The Late Show” — annotating the address and taking digs at the administration. Colbert aired a clip showing Trump being announced Tuesday night as “the president of the United States!” “Any chance there’s a mistake and ‘Moonlight’ is the president?” Colbert quipped, crossing his fingers. He also took a jab at Trump counselor Kellyanne Conway, who was back in the news earlier in the day over a photo showing her kneeling on an Oval Office couch. Although Conway has been a favorite mark among late-night comics, Colbert did not reference any specific incident. But he showed a clip from Trump's address in which the president said he had placed a hiring freeze on “nonmilitary and nonessential federal workers.” “Nonessential federal workers,” Colbert repeated. “So Kellyanne Conway is out? … You will be missed.”

Trump can prove Obama wrong

There is a very simple way for Donald Trump to prove himself right and Obama wrong. He can order that all relevant material surrounding the potential wiretapping of his phones in Trump Tower be declassified and made public. As president, he has the executive power to decide on classifying or declassifying information. This executive privilege has been established and held up by the courts and gives the president great leeway in choosing what should become public or be kept secret. For President Trump, who often appears to overestimate his presidential powers, being the sole decider and arbiter of America's secrets might have a certain appeal as he could use it to highlight his personal power. Moreover, proving his predecessor wrong would not only publicly humiliate Obama, but could also get him in potential legal trouble. Both are tactics Trump publicly deployed repeatedly during the election campaign. So instead of lamenting on Twitter about his alleged victimisation at the hands of Obama, President Trump could and should simply order the release of all the relevant material regarding potential wiretapping and surveillance of Trump Tower. Given that from Trump's perspective releasing the material appears to only have an upside, not doing so would beg the obvious question: why not?

A possible explanation of Trump's erratic post-election behavior

Via [wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradise_Syndrome): > a condition in which a person suffers a feeling of dissatisfaction despite having achieved all their dreams Also expressible with the phrase "...now what?", I feel like this is what Trump is experiencing right now. I doubt he really intended to win in the first place. He may have intended to loose and launch a news empire to rival the likes of even Fox and Breitbart--remaining the underdog fighting against _the man_, and corralling followers by that fact alone (It's not that far-fetched; he's had years of acting experience). But now he has **become** the man, and no longer has that advantage. He now has to be the very thing he's styled himself as fighting against. In a sense, everyone has called his bluff by electing him. He no longer has Hillary to blame for things, and is suddenly accountable for things in a way he wasn't before. He's put [an awful lot](https://trumptracker.github.io/) on his plate. It's time to see how much he finishes.

Refugees are fleeing Trump's America and crossing the border into Canada. This is what Trudeau needs to do

For so many refugees, the promise of America must feel like a mirage; to finally arrive at a destination that from afar seemed synonymous with democracy, liberty and opportunity, and now, up close, has revealed itself to be just as prone to the darker properties of despotism as the countries from which they have fled. Now that the lamp beside the golden door seems to have been snuffed out, the huddled masses have little choice but to pin their hopes on the US’s northern neighbour, Canada. Trudging through waist-deep snow and braving the bitter cold, hundreds of refugees in the US have been risking their lives this winter trying to make it into the northern country.

Donald Trump's Inaugural Pastor Creates 'Safe Haven' for Immigrants

The Sacramento church of an evangelical pastor who led a prayer at Donald Trump’s inauguration is offering beds for congregants who need a safe haven from immigration raids or domestic violence. Pastors at New Season Christian Worship Center set up thirty cots in two large rooms just days after the President issued his January executive order that expanded federal deportation policy. Congregants spread the word that they were available for anyone who was afraid of the immigration policies’ potential effect. Half a dozen families showed up in the past month. Most stayed just a couple of days. About half came with fears over immigration and half with fears of domestic abuse, according to church officials.

Donald Trump’s assertion about terrorism had a major falsehood

President Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress was filled with exaggerations and falsehoods, one of which warrants particular attention — namely, his claims about foreign terrorists. “According to data provided by the Department of Justice, the vast majority of individuals convicted for terrorism-related offenses since 9/11 came here from outside of our country,” Trump claimed. In fact, most of America’s recent terrorist attacks were committed by either native-born American citizens or immigrants who had received American citizenship.

Democrats Are Close To A Huge Win As The GOP Plan To Repeal Obamacare Is Collapsing

With Republican opposition from the conservative wing of the party growing to the leadership’s plan for Obamacare repeal, united Congressional Democrats are getting closer to a huge win if they can save the health care law. The 32 member House Freedom Caucus is opposed to the repeal and replace bill because it contains a tax increase and refundable tax credits to purchase health insurance. They are also opposed to the idea of millionaires being eligible for the tax credits. The leader of the 172 member Republican Study Committee, Rep. Mark Walker, also came out in opposition to the legislation. The Republican opposition in the House would be enough to kill the bill, but there is also a conservative rebellion in the Senate as Republican Senators Rand Paul (KY), Mike Lee (UT), and Ted Cruz (TX) all oppose the legislation.

FBI once planned to pay former British spy who authored controversial Trump dossier

The former British spy who authored a controversial dossier on behalf of Donald Trump’s political opponents alleging ties between Trump and Russia reached an agreement with the FBI a few weeks before the election for the bureau to pay him to continue his work, according to several people familiar with the arrangement. The agreement to compensate former MI6 agent Christopher Steele came as U.S. intelligence agencies reached a consensus that the Russians had interfered in the presidential election by orchestrating hacks of Democratic Party email accounts. While Trump has derided the dossier as “fake news” compiled by his political opponents, the FBI’s arrangement with Steele shows that bureau investigators considered him credible and found his line of inquiry to be worthy of pursuit.

House Republicans Are Helping Donald Trump Keep His Tax Returns Secret

House Republicans shot down an effort to finally make President Donald Trump’s tax returns public. Rep.
